I want to do a line-drawing logo for my business-Central PA Birth and Breastfeeding Services. I have several ideas including my favorite, a big hand holding a little hand.

I have no idea how to make a logo on the computer? Do I need special software? I found some online, but it seems expensive. And then I have to choose from their samples?

How do others design their logo? cost? I'm sure this has been discussed before but i am not finding it doing a search.

Thanks!

You could purchase software, learn how to use it, and then create your own logo (software examples would be Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc.)

Or you could have a graphic designer create one for you. I've seen prices range anywhere from $25 for a logo to over $1000 or more. If you want to use a WAHM, do a search on Google or Yahoo for "WAHM logo design" or "WAHM graphic design" and you'll get lots of results.

Usually designers will give you a certain amount of mockups to choose from and then you can fine tune the one you go with. But yes, you will ultimately have to choose from what they provide you so you'll want to find someone who has a portfolio of designs that show the quality and style that you are looking for.

I am *not* tooting my own horn here, I swear, but there are quite a few WAHM designers here, check here first, if you decide to have someone else do it!

Anyway, there's a free program called GIMP that I hear good things about. I personally use Photoshop CS2, but it is incredibly pricey for someone who isn't using it for a big hobby or business.

You may be able to find that sort of image already out there by sorting through clip art or a stock photography site like istockphoto.com. (It's not just photos but some graphics as well.)

I don't know what your budget is, but maybe you could find a WAHM who is just starting to build her portfolio who will do one at a discounted rate. I've seen WAHMs on hyenacart who will do logos for around $35.

But I would say it would be tough to do your own without the proper program; and you're right, they're expensive! For headers and such, I've heard of people using xaraonline.com's free tools.

There are a lot of programs that offer free 30 day trials as well. I know Paint Shop Pro Does and even Flash could be used for drawing. (yes, I know I'm weird, but Flash Drawing has been far too easy for me so I can't give it up completely, lmao!) I'm not sure if Photoshop offers a trial but you can check. This way you can use a nice program and play around in them and get your logo drawn. If you decide you'd rather have someone else do it, definately checkout the MDC mamas.

Actually, using any graphics you "find" online or get from istockphoto and clipart places for logos is prohibited. Your logo is your business' identity, and using a copyrighted image/graphic is not legal. Everything on the internet is copyrighted/owned by someone unless it is specifically stated that it is not and that is it ok for you to use.

Example, from istockphoto's policies:
...The following are "Prohibited Uses" and you may not:
...use any of the Content as part of a trade-mark, design-mark, trade-name, business name, service mark, or logo;
