Hi, I don't know if what I have been told is true, b/c to me it seems pretty preposterous... maybe someone reading this thread can answer or Patty, if you know... I probably seem like an idiot asking but here goes...

I was told that midwifery is not legal in MO. that if I have another kiddo, I'd be better off trekking back to AZ to see my mw and stay at a friends house to deliver if I want to have another child the way I want to. I live in Phx, AZ and had one child in a freestanding birth clinic w/ cnm and child number two at home with licensed mw. The home birth was AWESOME!!!!

Is this for real? or are we out here just getting misinformation?
It is true that direct entry m/w's are not currently legal in MO. There is a bill being considered right now that would make it legal though... We should know more soon.

But that doesn't mean that there aren't m/w's delivering babies arround here.

I have a friend who is in Sullivan who is looking for a midwife as well... I know direct entry/lay midwifery isn't legal, but are there Certified Nurse Midwives practicing around St Louis? Would she have to drive across the river to IL to see one?

My OB had a CNM in her practice but I was told that she doesn't attend births due to the reason given above. I can give you the number to their office she might have a suggestion for your friends...sorry I can't be of more help.

My friend had a very lovely birth at the BC in Columbia. She had health insurance and it was something like another $900 on top of what was insured.

But she was living in Columbia at the time and it's a 1.5-2 hour drive from St. Louis!

For those of you who are interested in helping out the midwife situation in this lovely state (right now attending a birth as a midwife is considered practicing medicine without a liscence, and thus a felony), check out the friends of missouri midwifes. They are almost impossible to google, so I thought I'd post a link.
