Yes, I know, it is an odd combination of things to look for in the same substance.

But we are looking for something we can pour into a mold. let it harden. Remove from the mold, put something on it to hold the shape and then bust out the substance that was put in the mold. Then we end up with a hollow shell.

I know I can use this foam insultion stuff that is liquid and foams hard and then busts. But it is super sticky and expensive.

I'm looking for something that is cheaper to make. I was thinking about a flour compound but I'm not sure. I haven't tried anything yet.

Got any ideas??

Just a brainstorming idea. Could it be something like wax that could be melted, poured in, molded, then melted to pour out? Or some other substance that could be solidified/liquified by temp. How about water, fill the mold, freeze it, work the covering and then let the ice melt and drain out? That would be free...

Just some thoughts.

ice'd be cool .. or even (this sounds like fun, but slightly "bad" ...) CHOCOLATE.

What about plaster of paris? Cheap and I've seen my art friends use it for similar techniques. Buy it at a hardware store for better prices than Michaels.

What the heck are you making anyway? Or can't you post it on a friendly family board .

i was thinking plaster of paris too. my dad's a sculpter and he's used it to make molds of his work.

you kind of lost me in your description of what you want to do though... are you trying to re-create a mold?

my dad said there's also a gel substance that you can get to make molds. it's specifically for mold making (probably found at art supply stores). might that work better for you?

WHAT ARE YOU MAKING!!!??? i wanna know!!! :LOL

What am I making...... speaker boxes. Custom speaker boxes.

You build a frame inside a car. Then you pour "substance" in the frame and it becomes solid. You are then able to bring it out of the car. You take a wrap (using resin) to surround the hardened "substance" then once the resin material hardens you bust out the "subsance" leaving you with a shell that a woofer or whatever goes into creating a speaker box.

its also known as glass work. The foam we had been using is just too expensive so we are trying to ome up with something cheaper that does the same thing.
