Hello! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> My name is Torre. I am pregnant with my first baby and planning a homebirth. I wanted to share with you some details of my pregnancy and see if I can get some advice on membrane stripping.<br><br>
My last menstrual period was 7/16/06. I did not chart mt BBT that cycle, but had previously. I tend to ovulate on day 18 and have a 9 day luteal phase. I had sex on cycle day 8, cycle day 14/15 (wee morning hours), and cycle day 21. I had an early U/S that dated my baby 6 weeks which made me due on April 25th. If going by my last menstrual period April 22nd. That means either way I am 38 weeks (either today or was on Sunday). Now, I have been spilling protein in my urine for the last 5 weeks. Just plus 1, nothing extreme and besides an episode with blurry vision, headache, left side numbness, and confusion last week (I was checked at the hospital and thought to have either had a mini stroke or be hyperglycemic) My EKG and Catscan were all normal and baby was happier than a clam in there. I had 5 trips to L&D from 28 weeks on with PTL. My daughter dropped for the first time at about 28 weeks and everyone was concerned I would have her early. BUT I made it. Now come this last week. I am so swollen. My feet do not fit into any shoes, I can no longer make it up and down the stairs. My hands will not bend to make fists. I literally look like the michelin tire man. My midwife is coming over today to check my blood pressure, urine, and reflexes. She said she would be willing to strip my membranes (although she prefers to wait until my due date). She also wants to talk about other induction methods. I wanted to know what other professionals would advise. I totally respect her opinion and know she will tell me what she thinks is best, I am juts curious. I was thinking that if I was dialated and effaced (was 1 CM and 30% as of last week) more than previous checks, I would think about letting her strip my membranes. I can't help to feel guilty and selfish though. Any insight?

I wouldn't beat yourself up feeling guilty. As I undertsand it, membrane stripping only "works"--as in, helping to start labor within the next 24-28 hours--f your body is already leaning toward that anyway (starting to dilate, effacement increasing, cervix ripening, etc). Given that the only side effect is perhaps some cramping and a very SLIM chance of breaking your water (from a too-rough exam), the decision is yours.
