My EDD is quickly approaching and I have no designated photographer for the birth! : I'm having a homebirth and this is my first child. I want DH to be at my side instead of behind the camera, and there's really no one else I know who would be available, so that leaves a professional. Problem is, I have a very small budget, so I was thinking there might be someone here in San Antonio, perhaps a student or someone wanting to build their portfolio, who'd be willing to work cheap. So, basically, I'm looking for leads. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Who is your midwife? You could ask her if she knows of an apprentice who would be willing to take pictures in exchange for being present at a birth. Each apprentice needs 10 observation births and taking pix at one would count! The apprentice just can't be your midwife's apprentice--the midwife would likely want her apprentice to be watching what she is doing & learning from that rather than focussing on pictures. That option would be free.

I bet some midwives or a more advanced apprentice would also be willing to go to a birth and take pix for you for less than what a professional photographer would charge. The plus for using a birth professional is that they know what to look for, what to take pix of, they understand the timing. The quality obviously wouldn't be professional, but it would definitely be cheaper.

Talk to your mw, she can help direct you further. Good luck, and congratulations!

Thanks so much for the great suggestions, Becci! My midwife is Holly Manzanera. I will def. ask her if she knows of anyone. I love the idea of having someone who's familiar with the birth process and would know exactly what shots to capture.

BTW, I think we may have met at a LLL mtg.

Yes, I remember meeting you! I hope all goes well and you are able to get the pix you want! I had a friend take pix at mine--she went CRAZY and I now have 600+ pix of my birth! LOL I love them though, they're great, and it brings back a lot of fond memories to look at them!
