I'm trying to find a good lactation consultant to help me with open sores at the base of my nipples that I've had for 12 weeks. :

I've talked to 5 LLL Leaders, 3 Midwives, 1 Dermatologist and 1 Lactation Consultant already. I am trying a last ditch effort to find another LC who may be able to help me. The first LC I talked to gave me the worst advice so far, which is why I am hesitant about finding a LC who will be able to help me. Otherwise I feel like I will be dealing with this pain until we wean.

I've posted in Breastfeeding Challenges but unfortunately did not get much of a response. http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=793389

Please help!

I'm so sorry about your pain...and the trouble you're having finding good advice! What a drag.

When I had a killer case of mastitis with DS 4.5 yrs. ago, I called the LC on staff at Fairview Riverside hospital. I don't remember her name, but she told me to come right in, and she was kind and comforting AND helpful. Come to think of it, so was the LC on duty (a different person) when I gave birth to DS there. They seem to have (or had, anyway) a good groove going there.

I hope that's helpful, and I hope you get some relief very soon!

I am in WI, so I can't help in your LC search. But, my heart goes out to you. I had so many problems with my first son, and I couldn't find an answer from a professional either.

Have you tried exclusivley pumping or a nipple shield for just a few days to give your body a chance to heal? Also, have you checked the articles at kellymom.com? That is where I self diagnosed and "fixed" myself.

Good luck.

I really liked the LC at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood. I don't remeber her name either and it was 4 years ago, but she really helped me when I had a son with latch difficulties and nipples that were cracking and swollen and painful. She gave me some gel packs that helped stimulate healing and felt so good to put on...sorry you are having so much pain.

I got good help from the LC's at St. Paul United Hospital Breastfeeding Resource Center. They will talk to you on the phone for free (651-241-6200) or see you by appt. Annecdotally, it seems women often have to talk to multiple LC's before problem is solved - keep trying!

Good Luck

I gave birth at Fairview Riverside in fall 2005 and at that time they had fired all their LCs except the one in the NICU. :

I know! Isn't that a mess? It was awful. Most of the nurses were very helpful and had undergone extra lactation training, but there was one who was on my case to top my daughter off with soy formula on her second night. : Luckily, the others were fantastic and a couple were even currently breastfeeding their own babies.
