looking for midwives in Philadelphia area

My best friend from college is pregnant. I am SO excited for her!

Anyway - she is interested in working with a midwife, but isn't sure how to go about finding one. Right now, she thinks she wants to be in a hospital, but she might be open to other ideas as time goes on.

So - she's near Philadelphia (and I'm in Florida). Does anyone have suggestions of good midwives? Her town is Oreland and her zip is 19075.

You can put the info in this thread or email me directly at [email protected].

Thanks so much!

No specific information but my friend used a birthing center in Bryn Mawr (near Philly).
The web site for the Bryn Mawr birth center is www.thebirthcenter.org - they are in the Western suburbs.

In the Northern suburbs, there is the valley birthplace although I've heard mixed reviews about some of their midwives.

I delivered at Abington Hospital. My practice (Womencare OB/GYN) was mixed between midwives and OB's, and I ended up having an OB attend my birth. There are some practices at the hopsital that are exclusively midwives, though.

If she wants to be in a hospital and is in the city, she should check out Pennsylvania Hospital, around 8th street. I have heard they have a great midwifery practice, and wonderful birthing suites for moms having a natural birth.
My mom is a midwife at Jeanes Hospital. Her name is Mary Woltjen and she's in with a group of OBs...the phone number is 215-745-8989. Not that this is a huge thing but a tidbit...my mom's paitents (even first timers) tend to not push long. I believe she said that the majority of her patients push for about 30 min...she doesn't have patients actually push just because they are 10cm...she'll tell them to do what they feel is natural but if they aren't feeling like pushing...don't because the body will move the baby down anyway.

There's another midwife there named Pat McCalley Sunday (yes her initials are PMS) and she delivered my first 2. She's also great. She's at the same hospital but in a practice of her own. I can only remember the last 4 of her phone number...but if you call the hospital they would have the number.

There is a birth center or something near Holy Redeemer Hospital...I've heard awful things so that might be a place to stay away from. Though there is an amazing group of peds at Holy Redeemer...they name is not coming to me though but one of the peds also works at Jeanes...that's how I found out about them.

I had DS at the Birth Center of Delaware, in Wilmington, Delaware-minutes outside of Philly. The website is www.thebirthcenter.com .

The birth center near holy redeemer is the valley birthplace that I mentioned above. I have heard very mixed reviews as well, which is unfortunate as I was very interested in looking into it for my next birth. Do you have any specific information about why people viewed it negatively? I know that one mama here had the m/w at a home birth and was very unhappy.

The great group of peds with HR WAS Valley Pediatrics. Most AP-type mamas that went to Valley saw Dr. Maria Mahoney. She split off from the practice to form her own group, Pediatric Care Group in Jenkintown.

Try www.doylestownmidwifery.com. They are about 30 minutes from Oreland. Fantastic ladies, great advocates!
i used valley birthplace for 1st 2 births.... would also like to hear peoples opinions... i myself had good births, but liked my midwifes for 3rd preg better...(i moved to ny) i liked them, but felt they were a little more on the medical side of midwifey (aka broke my water, used a doppler for all appointments, got induced at 42 weeks.. i 'm pretty sure it was cytotec ahhh!!! that sucks) i thought they were good care though. just make it clear what you don't want, and they are good about respecting that IMO. my friend used the BC in bryn maer and didn't love it. sorry fot no more help.
Hi.
I live in Alburtis, near Allentown and we have a great group here called The Midwives and Associates. If she hasn't found any lmk and I'll email you with their phone#!
I highly recommend Kathy Hindle. She's a CNM but was a lay midwife for many years. She does homebirths and hospital births (at Chestnut Hill Hospital). Oreland is definitely in range for her. We had our 2nd baby at home with Kathy and she was wonderful - a real midwife who gives you one-on-one care and holistic/natural perspective but has hospital priveleges.
She's worth meeting. 215-249-9646.

Best of luck to your friend! Remind her that she may have many births, but her baby only gets this one - go with what feels best and don't let fear rule.
I had Julianna at the Bryn Mawr birth center.

I had a positive birth experience there.

I have also had two children at the Reading birth center with positive experiences.
