Our neice has moved in with us and she is sometimes bored. I think she could use some books but she is not into that. She really loves the internet but we are not too happy about all the junk that's in most of the chat rooms and such. Magazines would be good if they just weren't so pushy about body image and sex.

So I would like to offer her a fun and clean alternative. A web site that is SAFE enough for her to get on and meet new friends without all the extra junk. Or magazines that can help her realize that womanhood isn't just about being cute and sexy, kwim?

Help please.

Just wanted to point out that if it's predators you're concerned about when you say "safe" -- the thing about predators is, they go where their prey is. No forum or chat for adolescents will be "safe" because if an adult predator wants to hook up with someone in that age range, they *will* use the forum as a way to do it.

Also, fellow teens and adolescents can be predators too.

So I am sure you already realize this, but just to reiterate that safety isn't a matter of what Web address it is, it's a matter of how involved you are and how good your communication is with your teen.

What I ment by "SAFE" is that the site (for example) is free of any porn getting filtered in. A place where they can probably talk about sexual issues but where strong sexual language is not allowed. Get my drift?

I know you're talking internet, but I just signed my 16 yr old up for a summer's worth of town tennis and (gulp) golf. For $100. That 3 hours of tennis and 3 hours of golf a week for 6 weeks for $100. I thought that was a major deal. Does your town have any summer programming for teens? Thought I would mention this as if you have little kids you might not realize many towns have low cost summer programming.

My son does have a job at a book store, but it's a only a few hrs a week.

As for internet, I only know neopets.

Oh-- i wonder if she might like books on tape as she is falling asleep. We get them at the library and I would recommend the Artemis Fowl stories. They are exciting, but not hard to follow. The tapes are well done!

Not a chat website at all, so maybe not exactly what you're asking about but I think the best Sex ED site out there for teens is scarlet teen And they do have a pretty great message board which looks "safe" and heavily trafficked to me.
