Hi all,

Abby from Vancouver BC here. I met up with some of you many years ago (3 or was it just two?) and went berry picking. I stayed with Sue (HI!)

Anyway, my family and I are coming to Minnesota! we will be in the cities on the afternoon of July 18 (next Tuesday) and are looking for something "to do" I grew up in MN, but not the cities and the cities was always a place to shop for us. I've long ago given up my drive to shop, and am now interested in nice parks (family), great beaches, swimming pools, or whatever. We'll also be in town on the 19 and 20, but we'll be at Valleyfair (we love amusement parks).

Any chance of meeting up with any of you on the 18? If not, would you be willing to suggest a GREAT and cheap (free???) park or place we could visit? We really aren't into shopping. My sister suggested the Sculpture garden (the free part) at the Walker Art Museum. We have science world passes, so we could go to the Science Museum. What else do you mamas do?

I USED to go to the como park zoo and conservatory, but my family is much bigger and more active now. What about the Japanese garden there? Still a nice place to visit? Cost?

Thanks so much...and HOPEFULLY I'll get to meet some of you.

Lake Harriet is a nice place for a family to hang out. All free, unless you buy ice cream at the bandshell. There are two beaches. The smaller Southeast beach is shadier, which we prefer, but further from the other things. It's about a 3 mile walk around the lake-- a nice walk unless it's too hot. There's also a bandshell with free concerts; a playground (near the bandshell); trolley rides on a stretch of old streetcar track; a beautiful japanese garden; a very cool wooded path through a bird sanctuary... lots of fun stuff for an active family to do.

http://www.minneapolisparks.org/gran...s/map_CL1.htm#

http://www.minneapolisparks.org/defa...D=4&parkid=349

http://www.minneapolisparks.org/docu...t_Concerts.pdf

Another really nice park is Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington. It has an enormous playground called Chutes & Ladders, a lake where you can rent paddleboats, canoes, and other watercraft, miles of hiking & biking trails, lots of picnic space, and a nice chalet with concessions, restrooms & whatnot. And it's free! It's connected by trails to 2 other parks as well: Richardson Nature Center and Bush Lake (which has a great swimming beach).

As a PP mentioned, Lake Harriet is a wonderful city park in Mpls. Minnehaha Falls is another fave of ours. On Tues. eves there are concerts in the bandshell. There are lots of nice walking paths both above and below the falls (some leading to the Mississippi), with pretty views from various places. Also fabulous ice cream (Sebastian Joe's--homemade and yummy) and seafood (at Sea Salt, a new restaurant in the pavilion). And more.

Awww... I wish I didn't have school on Tues... The Children's Museum is a blast! The science museum currently has the dead people there... I forget the exibit's name... You know what I'm talking about, right? Fort Snelling state park is very nice and has a beach as well as trails-o-plenty. A day pass is 7 bucks. You might want to visit Peapods, if you want to check out a natural parenting store. They sell wooden toys and cloth dipes...
