Can somebody please explain to me how you lose weight doing yoga. I just got a Yoga box full of flashcards with poses on them and two CDs to watch, but I just don't understand how you can lose weight when you're moving slow. Do you actually sweat? To me it seems like just a lot of stretching. Silly me bought cardio pilates on DVD, and I just about died, so I wanted to do something more.. slow, so I want to start doing Yoga within the next few days, but I just don't understand how this will help me lose weight. Does it work as well as pilates? Does it take longer to achieve the same results as pilates?

It really depends on what kind of yoga you do. I do astanga/power yoga and have lost weight when I do it regularly. It sequences the postures in a flow so it gets your heartrate up. There are types of yoga that are primarily a good stretch and relaxation.

I'm not sure about pilates. I've tried it and just didn't like it. I've been doing yoga for so long that I've become biased

Try out some classes and see if you like one. Yoga is more than just physical, so the awareness of your body and meditation can bring you into balance. Or try ashtanga, power yoga or Bikram yoga if you want a workout with your meditation!

I have lost weight doing yoga before. Mostly because it was lots of holding positions and it firmed me up. Since fat lives on muscle, the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.
Also just breathing properly can help with metabolism functioning.

I think that the wholeness of yoga would definitely make someone lose weight because it is about a lot more than just postures.

I am on a quest to lose weight with eating changes and yoga being my two main means of achieving it.

Just getting ones body moving is a huge step towards weight loss.

Good luck.

I lost weight doing yoga. It is possible. If you have never done yoga before, I would recommend going to classes. You will have guidance on your postures and someone to make sure that you are doing things the right way.

I also found that having other people there was a motivator. I just learned that i couldn't really go with one really good friend. While she has practised much longer than I, she did a ton of complaining and I couldn't focus.

Most studios will let you come to a class or two free or buy a limited number of classes so you can see if the studio style matches what you want.

I love yoga and highly recommend it!
