I gave my 4.5yo DD some chewy candy yesterday evening
:...some fruity "leather"-type thing. While she was eating she said that her tooth hurt. We were in the car and she didn't say anything else and I forgot about it. This morning she got up and showed me a looth tooth (front, bottom). Ugh. Did I just cause her tooth to fall out prematurely? Or could it have already been "on the verge"? I thought that they don't start losing teeth until 6yo. A quick Google search turned up the fact that some kids can start losing teeth much earlier. If it happened on its own, I would not be worried, but with the candy and all...I will take her to the dentist today or tomorrow, if I can get an appointment...

I doubt the candy made it become loose. Six sounds late to me. My son will be five in June and has already lost his bottom two teeth and his permanent teeth are in. (My daughter hasn't lost any yet but her teeth came in a little later. Our ped dentist said the earlier they come in; the early they fall out. My son's teeth came in really early. When I mentioned to our then ped I thought he was teething he said teeth do not come that early especially considering my children were preemies...he was wrong.) My niece turned five in Nov and has already lost four teeth.

My oldest lost his first tooth at 5 last year. It was loose since about his birthday but he wouldn't wiggle it and babied it. I made him wiggle them out when the permanent teeth came through behind them.

My youngest lost his first tooth this week at 4.75.

The average age is 6. I lost my first tooth when I was 4 (I didn't even know that you lost teeth, I thought I broke my mouth) The little boy I watch is 8 and just lost his first tooth. Most do lose their first tooth around age 6, but it's not abnormal for her to lose some early.

I think this sounds typical for some children. When my DD was in preschool she had friends that hadn't turned 5 yet who were starting to lose teeth, although most of the kids started losing them right before their 6th birthdays in kindergarten.

My DD will be 7 soon and has lost 2 on bottom and 2 on top. She has 3 more loose now. She already has 4 of her permanent teeth.

Thanks all. I am feeling reassured now. I actually "tested" the candy myself today and am convinced that it could not have knocked loose what was not already on the verge. I was just so surprised. She is rather proud to be like her older (6yo) friend, who lost a tooth last week! Anyway, it has prompted me to make her first denist apppointment, something which I have delayed until now...

The candy didn't cause it. The tooth hurt because it was loose.
I agree FWIW my DD lost her first two bottom teeth right around Christmas she Turned 6 last October. No more since then.

I was told by our dentist that it depends on when baby teeth erupted. Dd was a late teether. She was over 1 before she cut her first tooth. She was 7 before she lost the one and only tooth she has lost (one lower incisor). She'll probably be 7.5 before she loses any more as none of the others are loose.
