Lots of stuff--thyroid, mastitis, debating early hb

809 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  gen_here
At my first OB appt last week, when I was 4w6d, I requested a thyroid panal done b/c I am hypothyroid. I just got the results today (after three phone calls) and my TSH level is high yet again, meaning I have to up my meds. I'm discouraged b/c my last two pregnancies ended in m/c and with each my thyroid stimulating hormone was elevated very early in the pregnancies. I'm trying to stay optimisitc and work on the assumption that I'm pregnant until proven otherwise, as some wise woman on these boards said, but it's hard.

In addition to all this, the breast abscess form mastitis that I had drained last week is not gone and I have to return to the surgeon's tomorrow. It's all very disheartening.

I told my dh yesterday that I didn't even want to try to hear an early hb with this pregnancy b/c I don't want to be told, again, that there isn't one. Now with this news, I'm thinking I do want to know to either believe I have a viable pregnancy or not. I'm taking progesterone supplements in hopes of staving off a m/c but it's all really out of my control. I just need to let things be, I suppose.

Thanks for reading, I know I'm all over the place today.

I don't have experience with thyroid issues but wanted to welcome you to the ddc and Congratulate you on your pregnancy. Many sticky baby vibes to you!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! I hope to be here for the whole wonderous nince months!
Let me try and comfort you on the thyroid issue. I'm going through them myself since the birth of my son. I was hyper (Graves) in college, so when I started having symptoms again, I was tested and now I'm actually hypo (we though post-partum hypothyroid... but really it's "no aparent reason" hypothyroid).

At my last appointment, I still hadn't had my first period since my son's birth (almost a year - I got it 2 days later). I asked my endo what I should do if I got pregnant - I had heard that I'd have to have a lot more frequent monitoring of my levels. He said that I was to call him as soon as I got a positive pregnancy test and he was going to immediately up my dosage because the body needs more thyroid hormone while pregnant.

I took him very seriously - I called him before I told my husband! They upped my dosage .25 mcg, and I was just scheduled for my first blood draw this week. I don't know my results yet, but they are very likely to change throughout pregnancy.

So, it could be totally normal... and I hope it is =)

I just got my results back today. My levels are normal (I didn't get the numbers - my husband took the call while I was napping with my son). So they would have been wacky if I hadn't had an increase in meds.

Hope that helps ease your fears some =)
I'm just kicking myself b/c I waited until my first OB appt for my thyroid test, which was last fri (and I should have gotten one on Monday), but I just got the results yesterday. I was hypo when preg with my dd five years ago and never did need my meds adjusted, so I just thought it'd be a good sign to have that be the case again. Anyway, I upped my dosage last night and that's all I can do. My TSH jumped from 1.7 to 12 and I'm only 5 weeks. It's best for it to be around 2. The good news is my T4 was fine, which is necessary for sustaining the pregnancy. I'm just keeping all body parts crossed and using my progesterone twice a day and get tested once a month.
Janola: I'm sorry to hear about all of the different things you have going on. I too have hypothyroidism. I guess luckily, my meds have stayed the same so far... who knows, they may have to up them later. As for the progesterone you are taking, it can work either way. I was put on progesterone therapy in my last pregnancy at five weeks and was kept on it until 12 weeks. In the end, my daughter was born and died a day and a half later. I am now 6 wks preg. and my dh and I have decided against any intervention this time. Sometimes you just have to trust that your body is taking care of things on its own. Each woman's situation is different, but for me, my progesterone dropped because my body was trying to get rid of an embryo that would never survive. Sometimes I wonder if physicians don't get a "God" complex. Good luck momma and I hope that everything works out great for you. Take care of yourself.

I had post partum thyroidism after my son was born 2 years ago. I have been off my medication for a about a year. I do get flair ups though if stressed or sick. I keep getting Mastitis and I am not breasfeeding for over a year now. I have gotten it 4 times this year. Does anyone else get this? I am wondering if it is from the thyroid.
I have hypothyroidism, too. I developed it after dd was born and was hoping it was just a post-partum thing, but it's Hashimoto's Disease. I had my thyroid levels checked at 5 wks and they were still normal (TSH at 2.2 and T4 around 1.4, I think). At its worst my TSH was at 169!

I'm not any help with the mastitis question, but I did get lots and lots of plugged ducts during the first year of nursing. I know they can lead to mastitis, though thankfully they didn't for me. I don't know if that's related to the hypothyroidism.

For those of you with hypothyroidism, how often will you get your levels checked during pregnancy?

I'm sorry about your loss, hopeful 1.

Janola, do you have an update on how you're doing?
Riversong, thanks for asking for an update. When my GP, who is a WONDERUL doc, got my TSh results, he called an endocrinoligist who suggesed I increase my Synthoid 40%, which I did and who asked me to come in within the week.

I went two weeks ago and had a really good talk with the dr, who said my numbers were not that bad, that it was good I checked my TSH levels early and that I should keep taking my increased meds and return in 6 weeks for another TSH test. She also said that Free T4 fluctuates a good deal with a pregnancy so she wouldn't test for that. So I felt reassured that I'm doing all I can.

My next OB appt is Friday (day after tom) when I'll be one day shy of 9 weeks. I am hoping I will be able to hear a HB for reassurance or at least have the OB tell me my uterus is appropriately sized and all. I feel quite pregnant--hungry, tired and more hungry, so I hope that means all is well.

As for the mastitis, I have some scar tissue from the abscess, but no more infection, so that's all good. Now I'm just trying to relax as best I can, rest, exercise and make it through this first trimester with a lovely beating baby heart in my belly.

I'll be getting tested every 6 weeks. I just had my blood drawn for the 3rd time this pregnancy today.
I have been hypothyroid for years. My dosage went up with pregnancy #1 but then leveled out until postpartum. Since then, I haven't been able to get normal numbers. I've gone from .025 to .2 dosage in less than 2 years. I just got another blood draw (I'm 12 weeks) and I'm waiting to hear the response. It was recommended to me to maybe check T3 and T4 counts as well as TSH.

What are some of the dangers of hypo in pregnancy? I had no problems with #1 and had a great, natural, unmedicated birth and we're still breastfeeding at 26 months!

I didn't go hypo until after my son was born, so this is my first pregnancy with meds. But my endo said the danger was early miscarriage if the hypo isn't under control and levels are too low. Since you're already at 12 weeks, I think the worst-case-scenarios (at least as far as thyroid is concerned) are a thing of the past for you now... so that's good news!
