I found out last week that my iron is low, I believe they said 10.4. I have iron pills to take... yuck! They are upsetting my stomach & taste horrible, I had to skip it today.
I also started having a very strange craving the past 3 weeks for chapstick, the original one. Also the taste of listerine, & has me thinking about the old ambesol liquid that my grandmother used to keep in when I was little. I think it's the camphor or menthol. Now, I'm NOT eating the chapstick, but enjoy putting it on several times a day. I have been applying it this way for months, since my lips are extremely dry & cracked this pregnancy. Also, I am NOT drinking listerine, but it is my usual mouthrinse, so the taste is there after using it. I just can't believe that I catch myself thinking throughout the day about the taste. It's so weird, I've never had anything like this before & I'm wondering if it's because of the low iron.
Anyone else experienced any odd cravings with a deficiency?

*after writing this, I did a little research & found that PICA can cause weird cravings, & could be linked to low iron. 'll be talking to my Dr at my appt next week

Try getting Floradix at the health food store. It is a liquid iron supplement. My iron drops off at the end of each pregnancy and the floradix is the only thing that brings it up. It doesn't taste great (kind of like fruity nails), but it doesn't cause the digestive problems, it is super absorbable because it is plant based, and it works. It's expensive and you need to take it twice a day. HTH

Ditto on the Floradix. My midwives recommend twice the suggested dose. My iron is really low, 8.9, and I have PICA for sure. If you asked me right now what my favorite food was I would say crushed ice. I feel like I need to shomp on it all day long. The smell of gasoline makes me giddy, and I would love to go to the beach and snack on some sand. But the PICA is nothing compared to the fatigue. I'm hoping to perk up soon...

I will definitely look into getting the Floradex, & I am more comfortable taking something all natural. I go to the Dr the beginning of next week so I'll ask them about the dosage.
Thanks for sharing that CityGirl43, good to know I am not the only one. I was so embarrassed posting about it, but glad I didn't delete it (I almost did!). I remember a cousin of mine used to eat ashes out of the ashtrays when she was little & it turned out to be some sort of deficiency

My friend used to lick the chalk walls in an eastern euro village where she grew up when she was little, and turns out there was a deficiency of some kind there too. Interesting.

Got news today that my iron is low too. Gotta go get a supplement... hate the nausea and whatnot but will try floradix...

Iron rich foods, as told to me by my midwife today: eggs, beef, leafy green vegetables, raisins, home made bran muffins with lots of molasses, apricot.

ETA - oh yeah and Special K.

I'm 10.6. My doctor recommended upping iron-rich foods and taking Floradix at the recommended dose on the bottle. I'm also drinking nettle infusion like water and getting shots of wheatgrass when I go to the food store. I've heard people having success with wheatgrass and nettles when even the Floradix and iron pills weren't doing much.

Oh my god, you are my soul mate :), I dream about eating ice, eating ice is my favorite thing. I literally go to Target to get ice water because they have good ice. Obviously, it is not good, I am on 650 MGS of iron per day to help combat it and it hasn't made me yucky yet, but I think I will look into floradix. Yeah, I have been tired too, so I am hoping it starts to perk me up as well.

Ha! I know all about "good ice". They used to have it at a sandwich shop by my house - the kind that comes in little pellets, and is easily chewed. The last time I had ice like that was at the hospital when I delivered my son. But I don't plan on going back there for ice or any other reason

I wanted to add that I am also taking chlorophyll after reading a few articles here and other places that it helps rebuild your blood supply quickly. I'm guessing its the same with the wheatgrass.

I have PICA all through pregnancy, but what I crave is just clay.. this french green clay that I can get at my local HFS. I think it's ok to eat some, as it's pretty harmless. I only have about a half tsp. a day in a glass of water. It absorbs toxins, so I think that is part of why I like it. I think the baby likes it too, I've realized, as whenever I drink it, he/she starts moving

I too am taking floradix, nettles, eating foods high in iron, etc. Chlorophyll is a good idea too
