What yarn have you used to knit the ribby wrap besides LTK bulky? I am thinking about using a bulky merino. Do you think this wouldn't be sturdy enough? I also thought of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky, though this doesn't seem as sturdy (not sure if this is the best word to say what I mean) as LTK bulky either.

Merino has a lot of stretch, so I would think it wouldn't be very appropriate for this soaker. However, I've made one out of the Lamb's Pride, and liked the results. It's a very sturdy, not too stretchy yarn with a really nice hand

It's good to hear you had a positive experience using the lamb's pride bulky for the ribby wrap. I have only knit with the lamb's pride worsted (which I really liked for the F&F soaker) and just seen the bulky in the store.

You definitely don't want a bulky yarn for the ribby, you won't get gauge with it. It calls for a heavier worsted weight which should give gauge of 4.5 stitches per inch on size 7 or 8 needles. Good subs I know others have used have been Jess' (http://www.yarndealer.com) merino, HPY worsted, Lamb's Pride Worsted, Cascade 220, Cascade Eco, nada's (http://www.woolywondersbynada.com) BFL and full belly farm organic

Thanks for the suggestions, Theresa! I actually have some of your 2 ply, but I want to wait to use it until after I have done one ribby wrap with yarn I buy at the local yarn store. I am a newbie knitter and I like to have somewhere I can go for IRL help if I get really stuck. They help you for free if you are using yarn you bought from them. The one from your list I know for sure they have is Lamb's Pride worsted. I love the results it produces. The one thing I don't like about it though is that the mohair makes the yarn a bit fuzzy and harder to make sene of when you are picking apart a mistake (to make matters worse I unwisely picked a dark color for my first soaker).

I might go ahead and use the Lamb's pride worsted though if that's the closest thing they have. They have a yarn called manos del uruguay that is a blend of a blend of Corriedale (?) and Merino. Anyone familiar with this stuff?

manos is seriously YUMMY stuff! It's soft, warma nd oh-so-pretty colors.

Oh, another suggestion, if you want to get away cheaply and still get the help from teh LYS, they'll probably have Plymouth Galaway. it's a nice, basic 100% wool yarn that's worsted weight and will work wonderfully. It's about $5 a skein at my LYS

It is pretty too--the manos. I am just starting with knitting. At first I thought I would only use cheaper yarn til I get good. But now I'm thinking nice yarn makes wonky knitting not seem so bad!
