Hello, I'm LeAnn and I'm a breastfeeder...
(Hi LeAnn)
My left breast, for about three days has had hard, painful lumps along the top left side. What is this? DS took and extended nursing break from that side, maybe a whole day, and it got a bit engorged, not REAL bad, but bad enough. I tried to massage down the lumps when he finally decided he was going to eat again, and then it got really sore, mostly around the areola. The lumps aren't as band now, but still there.

And on a related question. DS sometimes kicks and screams and crys when I try to nurse him, so I figure he's not hungry. So thanks to DH and a stupid Dr. ds is hooked on a paci. But sometimes he'll have the paci for a few minutes and start crying, like he's upset that it's not giving him milk, so I'll offer the breast again, and he kicks and screams again. Anyone else get this? What should I do? I hate that damn pacifier, and I feel like he prefers it over me... but then I feel like I'm forcing the breast on him, when he is obviously hungry. I have to "trick him" into eating, but there is a lot of struggle between us before he calms down wnough to take it. I could really use some help with this...

Your lumps sounds like a blocked ducts. You will have to massage them out - even though it is painful. There are 2 or 3 threads devoted to blocked ducts currently on the first page. Here are the current links...

The kicking and screaming at the breast could be an overactive letdown -

Or maybe a sign of reflux - there are many threads devoted to reflux.
Do a search and you should find lots of information.

And if you LO was hungry he would not take the paci. Sometimes I have found that my LO roots like he is hungry but is really sleepy and just wants comfort to go to sleep. If he just ate well 1 hour ago - he probably wants to sleep not eat again. There are days when they will eat quite frequently like really hot days, or a growth spurt, but I would see if they are sleepy first.
