Today, IL Repubs are struggling with comparisons of their Senate candidate, Jack Ryan, to Bill Clinton. Ryan's divorce records were recently unsealed, and it turns out he lied to everyone about there not being anything 'embarrassing' in them. His ex-wife alleges he pushed her to go to sex clubs so others could watch them have, um, relations. Some are saying he deceived them and should step down, and others are saying it doesn't matter. The same people that got their panties all twisted when Clinton lied about his sexual encounters.

This comes out just after Clinton's book is released.

Do you think this stuff should matter?

I don't care what other people do together. Although, it seems like he was a bully about their exploits and if she wasn't comfortable with the sex, isn't that rape?
I never cared what Clinton did, that was a problem for his wife and he to solve. How embarassing to have your husband infidelity's splashed across the news, then to be asked about it by Katie Couric (who I can't stand!) People in power are going to have sex with other people, it's always there.

I could care less what they do sexually. But I have to admit I feel that if they made such a big deal over Clinton and spent what 80 million dollars on it, then alls fair for going after the repubs too. Even if they like to sell themselves as all rightous.

I think that what's good for the goose is good for the gander or, maybe more accurately, what's good for the Democratic gander is good for the Republican gander.

Frankly, I never felt that Clinton's sex life should have become a political issue, and I would rather that Ryan's sex life wasn't an issue either. However, the conservative "family values" types can't have it both ways: they put made sexual indiscretions a public issue during Clinton's presidency, and they can not now turn around and say that such things are private.

Shonahsmom, I read an article about Obama recently that was positively glowing. Really sounds like someone to pay attention to for the future ... Are you from there?

The Ryan sex-scandal thing sounds like he just didn't admit to whatever it is people want to hear about (which all politicians do anywtionay, so who cares). The difference with the Clinton thing is that he said some such thing under oath. Big difference ... or did I miss something in the Ryan situation?

(And I say that being a fan of Bill's. Not for anything he did personally, but more because he was at the top of Al Gore's ticket ... and Al was robbed ... several times before 2000, even ...)

I still maintain that Clinton did not lie under oath.

I don't think it should be an issue (sex between consenting adults) BUT I would also hope that conservatives that let that be a huge issue w/Clinton would give it the same precidence when it happened w/a Republican.

Hmmm...

JMHO, but I have always felt that the whole Monica/Kathleen Willey/Gennifer Flowers/Juanita Broderick/Paula Jones etc., thing was "turn about fair play" for the Republicans who retaliated against Clinton and the Democrats for Watergate. the Republicans knew Clinton had one huge weakness.

What do I mean?

I mean Clinton, Hilary Rodham, was a young Yale Law School graduate in 1974. She landed a job on a Senator's staff in Washington, D.C. - the staff of Republican Senator Stanley Dors. While on that staff her chief assignment was to study the 1867 impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and then update and draft the modern procedures for impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon.

As you probably know, Nixon was told that there were enough votes in the House of Representatives to impeach him and enough votes in the Senate to convict him. So he resigned, rather than put the country through the torture; this was the second time Nixon simply gave up rather than fight the status quo; the first time was in November 1960 when he lost narrowly to JFK after the votes from Cook County, IL came in.

The rules that Hilary drafted were not used against Nixon, but I believe they were used against her husband.

JMHO, researched and all.

It is, of course, impossible for HRC to be objective in this case, but in her book, "Living History" she talks about how frustrating the impeachment was simply because it did NOT follow the rules she had worked so hard on researching/establishing in Watergate.

I really hope, though, that her involvement in proscecuting Nixon had *nothing* to do with it.

I am from/in Chicago. I really have very little faith in any politicians, but everything I've read about Obama has been somewhat impressive.

I think he is someone to watch... very possibly as a 2012-2016 presidential candidate.
