OK, I had no idea that they were thinking about making it non-vegetarian... but still, good to know, that they've abandoned those plans.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6673549.stm

"Mars has abandoned plans to use animal products in its chocolate, and has apologised to "upset" vegetarians.

The firm had said it would change the whey used in some of its products from a vegetarian source to one with traces of the animal enzyme, rennet.

The Vegetarian Society organised a campaign against the move, asking members to voice their concerns to parent company Masterfoods.

Mars said it became "very clear, very quickly" that it had made a mistake.

In just one week, more than 6,000 people bombarded the company, which produces the Mars, Snickers, Maltesers and Galaxy brands, with phone and e-mail complaints.

Forty MPs also signed a petition to voice their opposition..."

On a side-note, can you see 40 members of congress protesting such a thing?? No way.

Which is one of the reasons why so many of their chocolates were kosher for many years ... they used to do it that way (or with different animal ingredients) and eventually changed.

Though they have factories in Turkey making the same product but without the animal products. Which is why all the kosher Snickers bars were made in Turkey ...

Would be better for my WeightWatchers if they would do the animal products thingy. Then I'd just lose my appetite for 'em ...

Sigh.

Ah... Muslims love Turkey too for chocolates, cookies, and such. There's this brand called Ulker? something like that which makes these Kit-Kat like candies that are rather addictive IMHO. They also have these cookies that have a marshmallow creme in theme which seem to disappear in our household.

If I'm buying store brand milk chocolate, my favorite is Cadbury Dairy Milk. For store brand dark chocolate, I go for Lindt. (Does Lindt count as store brand?) But my uber-favorite indulgence are these little Omega-3 dark chocolate truffle thingies. Can't remember the Brand name.... but they are truly decadent.

Well, I'm glad they went back on that, but I'd like to hear more about everyone's favorite chocholates (especially the truffles...so if you think of the brand name, post it here!)

Rennet comes from the inside of animals stomach linings, I believe. Usually a pig or a cow, IIRC. It's a digesting enzyme used to break down dairy in cheese.

Green and Black's
Lulu's CoCo (raw, organic, vegan, agave sweetened, different but habit-forming.)
Dagobah, especially the hot cocoa, but I hear Hershey's bought it? Yeah, they did and holy carp! There was a recall due to lead in the chocolate!)
