We've got a new puppy. He's been having , um , i'll be sensitive since this isn't the gross out thread.... um , irregular bowel issues. This happened about an hour after I put flea spray on him. I didn't at first put the two together. but after reading the back of the bottle I thought maybe it was. then again.... I thought it was maybe worms. All puppies have them. Hmmmm. I waited til the vet office opened on Monday. I called. The vet tech said to bring him in , we'll weigh him and give him worming meds.

I show up. We weigh the puppy. All of eight pounds. lol I tell her about my connection of flea spray and loose bowels. She says "that's not possible". With finality. Like my question was stupid. She turned away from me. I told her what I'd read on the back of the bottle. She asked what brand it was and where I got it. I said hartz and kmart. She said 'yeah we don't recommend it because of that". Okay , so my question was valid. Being the irritating person I felt like yesterday I pointed that out. She rolled her eyes. She then says "it's worms". um. okay. Even tho she's been bratty to me I figure she sees enough of this...blah blah blah.

She hands me a puppy packet with a pill in it. Pronounces it a free pill. Take it home , read the directions and the packet , give it to him. This will not take care of the worms puppies have when they are born. (tape worms). um. okay. I get home , read the packet and it says "DO NOT ADMINISTER IF DOG HAS NOT HAD HEART WORM TESTING" . I called the vet's office. The same vet tech answered. She said "nah ignore that. give it to him". Then she said "i've got another call" and hung up . hmmmmm me no like that. I haven't given the puppy the pill. I will call when I know she's not there. Who the heck was she and where is my normal vet tech ?

Also while we were there I told her I had to make an appt for my cat to be spayed. She asked if the cat had ever had a litter. I said yes , just about ten weeks ago. She asked about the kittens. I said all but one had found homes. She asked when mama cat quit nursing. I said , " well the kitten is on solid food and drinking water and has been for a couple of weeks , but mama still nurses him whenever he wants. His main nutrition source is food though. " She exploded out of her seat leaned across the counter and said "nursing past THREE weeks is bad for the mother cat". I actually laughed out loud. "Where did you learn that ?" She said "it's best to put them on formula. nursing mothers need protien. it's just like human babies. nursing is good for a couple of weeks then it's bad for the mother. You need to seperate them. like you would a baby in daycare"

What ? At this point I've decided the vet tech is an idiot. I told her she needed to go back to school. Read some books. I pointed out even the VET says extended nursing of animals is excellent. Oh talk about mad. Talk about uninformed.
:

I'll call the vet personally when I've calmed down enough not to yell at him about his lousy new help.

I have no words.

Well, okay, I'm recovering... she'd better get out there and tell all those animals in the wild that they must stop nursing after 3 weeks and they better get those babies on formula. :LOL Never mind they don't have calendars, maybe they can get a free calendar with their formula.

Well, I know a few years ago one of the formula companies used advertising with a mama rabbit feeding a baby rabbit with a bottle.
Maybe that was what your vet tech friend was thinking about?

Wow. I normally don't complain about people to their bosses but I think the advice she is giving is potentially dangerous (flea spray not possibly responsible for diarrhea, worming pill that doesn't kill all worms, to disregard the warning on the pill instructions, etc). I would either deal with the vet directly or ask to deal with another vet tech.

I'm a vet and all I can say is Oy, I would not be enthusiastic about employing such a misinformed (and misinforning) nurse.

Definately bring up all these issues with the doc, the nurse does not seem to have been educated on any of these issues. Your issues are all valid.

LOL I am a vet too and definitely would tell the vet what his tech is saying and also about her attitude!

FYO the HW issue is in case your dog had HW its best not to give another worm pill as it could cause a reaction by killing off the heartworms too fast, but your pup is too young for that so it should be fine.

Jen123, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO WASH YOUR PUPPY THOROUGHLY ASAP!!! We put some Hartz flea product on our kitty last year and it nearly killed her. Within a day she was making huge messes in the litter box, then she started stumbling, and by the next day she couldn't control her back legs at all, she would try to walk forward and her back legs would veer sideways and she would fall every few steps. It almost looked like she had neurological problems, it got so bad so fast. Our vet told us that brand is terrible, terrible stuff and has been known to kill cats & dogs. We washed her really well and she started recovering almost immediately, thank goodness.

I felt so awful, I was just trying to save a little money by not buying the expensive flea treatment from the vet! I wrote a nasty letter to the company including my vet's diagnosis & while they sent back a letter stating that they did not believe their product was at fault, they paid half of my vet bill as a "gesture of goodwill".

Okay, this is so ridiculous I had to laugh. Does this tech have ANY vet training at all??? (I won't even go there with the analogy to human babies.)

Thank you. I did wash my puppy right away. I washed the other dog too.

My cats seizured on that stuff so I don't know why I thought it would be okay for dogs.

I had on hand the homeopathic formula Vaccine Detox and gave it to the animals. They seemed better afterward.

This whole thing started when I found a disgusting amount of fleas on two of the five pets we have. I have since found a natural product called NEEMS. It smells funny , but it's non toxic.

I've thrown away all my hartz products.

Did you ask her if she could give you a free sample of special kitty formula? :LOL

I am sorry that she was such a loser. I hope your puppy recovers quickly.

Neem Oil products are much safer and gentler. I wanted to say the homeopathic remedy Nux Vomica is really good for detoxing from chemicals and may be in the Vaccine Detox but is usually different than detoxing from a vaccine. Anyhow hope you get rid of the fleas, you also need to treat the environment and can use beneficial nematodes (that eat the flea eggs and larvae) and also Boric Acid based products in the house (but vacuum up well). Hope this helps!

Its crazy!

However all through vet school the importance of colostrum and mother's milk was emphasized and how animals that did not get these were more likely to be sick, not grow well and have other problems.

Working as a vet with both large and small animals and watching what animals do NATURALLY made me much more aware of how important it is for human children too.

Not sure where the Vet Tech got her info but probably she has a BS degree...

Sometimes I wish people would quite yammering on about things they obviously know nothing about

what is a nematode? we dont have fleas but i am interested in finding out natural ways to take care of it if we ever do have that issue.

about the vet tech....that's ridiculous about nursing past 3 weeks. anyone who knows anything about animals knows that 3 weeks is NOT the cut off. it's scary to think what other advice she may be giving others who may not know better and will do what she says!

It is a small worm or nematode that is a natural predator for the flea eggs and larvae which is freeze dried and then reconstituted and sprayed on the yard to combat the flea population.

For more info go here. I just prefer to use more natural products rather than chemicals.

Wow! I'm glad that she does not work for *my* vet. Could youo speak to your vet about your concerns? I mean, apart from the fact that she gave you bizarre and wrong advice about nursing kittens, her attitude towards worming your dog verges on negligent...

Hope your puppy is feeling better soon.
