So, it's no good when you're stuck on your gauge swatch...

The instructions say to cast on 40 to make the gauge, and then use the "magic loop" to knit 40 rounds. Um, what is that? I'm really not clear on what to do...can someone explain?

I think you're mis-reaidng it, cause I don't have anything about magic loop for the gauge swatch
Here's the directions cut directly from teh pattern, what you want to do is mimick a round swatch by knitting every row, but since you've got too few stitches to actually go around, you work it as follows:

To work your swatch, you will cast 40 stitches onto your circular needles. The poncho will be worked in the round, so you'll need to work a "fake" round swatch. You can do this by knitting across the row. Then, instead of turning and purling back, you will slide the work back across the needle. You'll loosely pull the yarn across the back (very loosely!) And begin to knit again across the row. Repeat this for each row, so that you've got an all-knit, stockinette swatch that you can measure. You would work at least 40 rows, then cast off loosely.

Okay...so I guess what I wasn't understanding was the "pulling the yarn across the back." But I figured out the magic loop thing - can I measure my gauge with the swatch I'll get from that?
