The current trading system is heavily weighted in favor of rich countries. Yet if poorer countries were to increase their exports by one percent, 128 million people could be lifted out of poverty.

Side note: The fall in price for coffee beans is affecting 25 million farmers and their families around the world. In Ethiopia, coffee farmers receive less than 3 cents for every $3 cup of coffee. As a result, farmers are unable to cover the cost of production. We can make a difference by asking for fair trade coffee in supermarkets, shops and cafes. A bit of good news: Starbucks Cafes have agreed to stock fair trade coffee in Australia.
