Our twin boys are now 6m old (cannot believe this!). We do a combo of them sleeping in the Pack N Play in our room/sleeping in the bed with us.

As they have gotten bigger, I'm really wanting to try to transition to them sleeping most of the night in the Pack N Play. We start out with both boys in the PNP, and by morning, I have the boys, plus their sister in bed with me, while DH is on the couch.

I nurse them to sleep, then TRY to lie them in the PNP. It seems like the minute they hit the PNP, they are awake. (while they have been asleep for at least 10 min on my lap!!) If I lie them in the 'big bed' (our bed) they keep right on snoozing.

Is the PNP not comfortable?? Is there another problem I am missing?? No offense, but there are some nights I'd just like to spend SOME time in the bed, able to stretch out, and not feel like I'm being chased all over by little boys.

Can I add a mattress pad? What have you done/would you do??

I just had this discussion with dh regarding ds2, who's the same age.

IME w/ ds1, the pnp is not comfortable enough for nighttime sleeping, but all over the thing there are safety warnings not to add any extra padding.

With ds1, we put him to bed in the evening (after nursing to sleep) in a port-a-crib, which is the same size as a pnp, but taller, and with a more substantial mattress. It was easier to keep him asleep, because I didn't have to bend over as far to lay him down. When he woke up several hours later, I was happy to go get him and bring him to bed with me.

We had to return the port-a-crib to my brother, who had a surprise baby a couple of years ago. I found a replacement I want to buy, but when I mentioned it to dh, he suggested we use the pnp instead. I think I talked him out of it, since I'm the one who does the nursing to sleep.
Honestly, I haven't had any luck getting ds2 to sleep in the pnp at all, and ds1 would only sleep in it 45 minutes at a time, day or night.

So that would be my suggestion... go with a crib instead, or a port-a-crib, if space is an issue.

It's much easier to move a baby into a crib (with the side rail down) than into a pnp where you have to bend over the whole side awkwardly when placing the baby down.

IMO, it's more about the awkward angle of placing the baby down, and not so much the comfort of the mattress.
