On this forum, there is a lot of venting about others being uninformed about car seat safety, or lamenting about our own lack of information with previous children or earlier on, etc. I am interested in knowing what people are actually doing about making this information more available.<br><br>
Among my family and friends, I seem to be the only one who keeps abreast of this kind of information. But even when I share what I know with others, there is nothing to reinforce the information to them - no public service announcements on the radio or television, no pamphlets at their pediatricians' offices, or in stores selling baby products, no information shared during prenatal visits, etc. Unless they take them time to check the websites that I tell them about - which none of them do - car seat safety information is not easily available, and I sound like a nutcase for discussing something that no one else is talking about. At least in my case, one individual reaching out to people is making very little difference. So what can be done, or what is being done?

Well, I have sent out emails to playgroups and such emphasizing the importance of rear-facing and harnessed seats past 40 lbs.<br><br>
On my drive home from Kentucky 2 days ago, I saw a billboard telling people that kids have to be in a booster until 4'9", which is of course arbitrary and not always the case, but it's a lot better than the current state of booster use.<br><br>
I wish there were PSAs about car safety. I wish the minimums were increased (2 or 35 lbs. RFing instead of 1 and 20 lbs.; 6 and 60 lbs. harnessed instead of 4 and 40 lbs., etc.)

Every month I send out a "public service announcement" to my big ol' list of parent/friends - usually done with graphics, pictures and diagrams in order to make reading it interesting (rather than just a long bunch of text). This month's was "<i>Baby, It's Cold Outside</i>" on the dangers of bundling and heavy coats in carseats, and the proper and improper use of aftermarket winter products.<br><br>
I also send out a "Happy Birthday Baby" announcement to those whose children are turning a year old that stresses the importance of extended rear facing.<br><br>
So that's what I'm up to. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink"><br><br>
