Ok I don't know where this belongs because it's a making/decorating question and not a food question.

My oldest dd wants me to make her birthday cake this year. But she saw this cool treasure chest cake in family fun and wants that one. Ok, I'll try that. My question is how the heck do you get the whole 13 x 9 x 2 inch cake out of the pan w/out it falling all apart? Is there a special pan I should be using? DO I just grease the heck out of it? I'm worried I'm not going to be able to do this.

If anyone knows the secrect and can help me I'd be greatful!

Hello! First grease the whole pan and then line the bottom w/ waxed paper and then grease that. OR you can grease the pan and then coat the pan in some flour and shake off the excess. The wax paper will work much better, though. Also, remember to cool the cake down before removing it from the pan. I find that refridgerated cakes came out much more firm when I baked. Good luck!

Yes, greased & flour the pan well (or, they make a special spray that does both, available at Wal-Mart, Safeway and baking supply shops).

Decide what kind of "base" the cake will be on. Heavy corregated cardboard, fome-core or a big tray. Cover with appropriate material (foil, wax paper, coloured-cellophane) and tape in place securely.

When the cake is cool, take the board you will be using to hold the cake, and place it upside down on top of the cake in the pan. Hold the bottom of the board and the bottom of the cake pan and FLIP-it over. The cake will then be on the board, in one piece!

After that, decorate and have fun!

Good Luck! I'm getting ready to make a sea serpent cake for ds's pirate-themed birthday party!

I second the grease and flour. (I havent tried the wax but maybe I will now
)

Do you have a cooling rack? Once the cake has completely cooled (very important) put the rack on top of the cake pan and flip over. Then take another cooling rack on top and flip it over again. This way it will be right side up. I hope that makes sense. Let me know and I'll clarify....
