Do any of you use a tag or other marker on your knit items as a sort of signature or just a way of remembering who made it and when? I'm thinking of two things: My kids lose the things I knit for them and I'd like it if we had a name on them, and when I make gifts, I'd like to somehow mark the event as well as show who/when made the item.

I have a paper tag I made up for selling items- and I have thought about getting some of those "hand knit by" labels. I'm curious if anyone knows of a good source for those.

I think a knit in sig would also be really cool! A little knitters monogram- like the stamp of a potter... only no one would think to look for it- unless it was really dramatic they might just assume it was a mistake. Have you ever seen the EZ sweater that had the person's whole name done in two colors of yarn on the inside of the hemmed waistband? That might be a good idea for your kids if they are going to wear sweaters to school and take them off.

sarah, I read your blog often. That dress is gorgeous, btw.

Some very small distinctive button might be an interesting signature. Haven't seen the sweater with the whole name - is it online somewhere?

I think sewing in a tag would be simplest but it would need to be small and soft - nothing scratchy.

My Oma had those tags, and added them to all the sweaters she made and sent us. We thought they were really cool and showed everyone, like to prove that she made them.

I was given a gorgeous set of fimo buttons shaped like hawthorn leaves, because my maiden initials were HAW: I've been thinking about making some more myself.

I'm going to keep googling, I think.
I was given labels from this company as an X-mas gift last year. Not the wording I would have chosen (my MIL got them, and they say "Made with love by Mummy", which isn't that useful for getting things back if you lose them!). That said, the labels are quite nice, and I would certainly get more (if I ever get through the 40 that I was given!).

Hakucho- Thank you for that link- I like that idea the best! What I really like about it is that you can customize then and include washing instructions. Some people worry that a printed label is not as durable as a woven one- true... but this is a handknit item we are talking about- not a pair of jeans- I really doubt that the knit thing will be thrashed around to the point that the label wears out.
