...and <b>IT FLOATS AWAY!!!!</b><br><br><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080314/od_nm/engagement_dc" target="_blank">http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080314/od_nm/engagement_dc</a><br><br><i>Hajji, of Hackney, east London, had concealed a $12,000 engagement ring inside a helium balloon. The idea was that she would pop the balloon as he popped the question.<br><br>
But as he left the shop, a gust of wind pulled the balloon from his hand and he watched the ring -- and quite possibly the affections of his girlfriend -- sailing away over the rooftops.<br><br>
"I couldn't believe it," he told The Sun newspaper.<br><br>
"I just watched as it went further and further into the air.<br><br>
"I felt like such a plonker. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me."</i>

She's mad at him for losing a ring HE bought? Talk about ungrateful.

I thought so too. He was trying so hard to be romantic, I would tell him, "Don't even worry about the ring, I'm just lucky to have YOU!"

I think it's awfully ridiculous of her to refuse to speak to him until he gets a new ring. At the same time, wtf didn't he get it insured right away?

I have to admit if I found out a man was that dense when it came to something that could cost us $12,000! I would seriously reconsider marrying him.

Exactly. I can't even imagine being upset at him. I mean... yeah.... it's gotta suck. But still- it wasn't like he did it on purpose!

yeah, that!<br>
I think that she is lucky to find out this personality quirk before they got married, namely, he spends more than he can afford and is careless about it.<br><br>
although honestly, I doubt the story. I think they are aiming for "poor guy" contributions (but I'm cynical like that LOL)

My DH would've been devastated if that happened to him. Talk about kicking a guy when he's down!

I don't know if I'd want to marry a guy who couldn't tie a slipknot...<br><br>

That should go down in the Financial Darwin Awards. What a moron!<br><br>
Though, you'd think she'd be a little more sensitive.

I wouldn't have been mad. It was a total freak accident. I would've understood. However, I would marry DP even if he gave me a ring out of a Cracker Jacks box. We're engaged but I don't have a ring, and I don't see why I need one.

To be fair, its been really windy over here........ One of my dangly bits on my hat got caught in a gust of wind so hard it really hurt my nose when it whipped it......<br><br>
I think its a beautiful idea and compared to how my DH asked me to marry him, its the most romantic thing in the world, even if the ring was lost (DH just said 'I'll marry you if you want.....' and that was it lol).<br><br>
It seems to me that sometimes on MDC, no matter what a guy does, he is always in the wrong. Its the only thing that grates me about this place.

I'd probably be pretty upset if my fiance spent that much on a ring if we shared finances but if it was his own money, she should be more sympathetic. Either way, refusing to speak to him until he gets another is pretty harsh.

Harsh, indeed<br><br>
It sounds to me like she's EXPECTING a $12,000 ring. She doesn't seem upset that he spent the money initially - nor about him trying to do something kind of nifty and creative to propose (which he obviously did - it just didn't turn out right). Nope, seems like she's "requiring" him to go on out and get one to replace the old one...The article says, "Now she is refusing to speak to me <i>until I get her a new ring</i>."<br><br>
Crazy.

I can't imagine how he must feel right now. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"><br>
I also can't believe at any of the replies that bash the guy...<br><br>
The minute 12K is worth more to me than the magic of the relationship that I share with DP, I'll gladly break it off.<br><br>
It's just a ring. For crying out loud... She wasn't worth any of it. I hope he gets a hint of what universe it trying to tell him heh..

I wouldn't marry a guy so careless and I wouldn't marry a woman to petty. I think they're made for each other <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

Oh and "plonker" is my word for the week now. I love "English English" slang. "American English" slang is so blah.
