I recently bought a bunch of TokyoPop books and DS discovered he loves manga. He especially loves Strawberry Marshmallow (although I edited them before he read since I'm not comfortable with him reading swearing and one section was inappropriate).

Does anyone have any suggestions for books to look for? We also have the Wish series, Somedays Dreamers and Bizenghast (well, I bought two but have the rest on their way through the library). He likes cute things, he isn't into boyish stuff, and I want things I don't have to edit, especially if we take them out of the library
. Some of the themes are kind of over his head but he doesn't care about that. I think he mostly likes the artwork and the novelty of reading a book backwards, lol!

If you can get your hands on it Card Captor Sakura is a really good one. It's out of print though your library may have it.

This is a link to a Wikipedia list of Kodomo anime and manga, which is anime/manga aimed towards children. Some of it may be hard to find but it a nice list. I'm a fan of a few of these now.

Always happy to help a fellow otaku.

Love love love Cardcaptor Sakura. Benign stuff and age appropriate (IMO). Might be considered too "girly," though, by a boy so be forewarned.

Hikaru no go is a fun one. DD also likes Inuyasha (very popular here!) and Ranma (but dd says that one is sort of "teenage-y")

Pokemon actually had a manga series that was pretty good (much better than the anime, IMO). My niece is into Fruits Basket which I think it's a pretty innocent story. Most mangas have an age rating on the back of the book...but most of them are for older kids because Japan has different standards of what is appropriate for kids than we do. Does he like anime at all? I highly recommend any of the Miyazaki films (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, etc.)

Yotsuba& is an excellent suggestion!! And yeah, don't overlook the licensed stuff. Some of the Pokemon manga are good and iirc the Kingdom Hearts one was pretty cool. Kodocha was cool, and takes place in the "real world" (no superpowers or magic). I wish I could remember some more titles....my stuff is all packed or given away though.

Definitely pre-read everything though, no matter what the age rating is. Even the "all-ages" manga has stuff in it you may not be comfortable with for a kid that age.

When my dd was that age she loved manga but especially loved the books (there are many, our library had several) on "how to draw manga". She would spend hours tracing the characters and then got to the point where she could make up her own. Something to check out if your ds likes to draw.

That's a great idea! DS loves to draw the things that he likes so I think he would like that.

I'll check out Cowy too
