Ok not really mangled, but the side of ds's tongue is really bad looking and he's been screaming all day today holding his fingers in his mouth, biting his hand etc. I can tell it really hurts him. From the looks of it he bit it. Anything I can do to help him? He nurses a lot but I'm 7 mos preg. and don't have any milk so that isn't helping.
Thanks!

I've heard that calendula can be used as an oral rinse, but I don't know all the details. I think it's okay to swallow, although probably more tasty to just spit it out.

Poor guy, I hope he's feeling better soon!

(16 mos) He's had a fever for a couple of days and has no other sores or spots. I think it's just a bite... he's got all 4 of his molars and canines as well, and like me, has the tendency to involuntarily snap his teeth shut as he's falling asleep (makes nursing to sleep lovely) so I've been assuming it's from his teeth, I looked up thrush and stuff and it really doesn't look like that, it looks more like tongue injuries I've done to myself. Is peroxyl hydrogen peroxide?

Yeah, it is. Peroxyl would work great, but I would be afraid since he's so young. The other thing that works well is Gly Oxide. You could put some on your finger or a Q-tip and apply it. I used to get sores alot as a kid, too much acid, and have tried every possibe thing!! GL! It will probably clear up pretty quick.

Well, that is exactly how Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease progresses. From your post I thought it was probably a bite to his tongue... but then you mentioned the couple days of fever prior.

Anyway, DD had it recently, and I don't think there is a whole lot you can do for the pain Popsicles and sips of cold water sort of helped. Or at least distracted her a for a bit.

My ds got HFM when he was about 10 months old. He didn't have the Hand and Foot part, just mouth sores. It's not the usual, but it happens.

The worst sore was one the frenulum under his tongue; it was swollen and flaming red. It was awful. He couldn't sleep, woke up screaming every half hour, wanting to nurse and then stopping because it hurt too much. It lasted a week or so, and at the end I was about ready to take him to the hospital because he was eating nothing and drinking so little. That day he finally started nursing again, so I didn't have to!

We got something topical at the drugstore, a type of coating that we painted on the sores he'd let us see. It was a numbing agent and protective. It seemed to help.

I hope your little one gets better soon!

Thanks for all the tips ladies!!!!!!!! His tongue is definitely doing better today, I hope that within a few days it won't really bother him at all, I didn't yesterday but I'll see if I can swab it with a little peroxide today. He's great a spitting out things he doesn't like and I think he'll be spitting out the bubbles hehe. I'll also keep my eyes open for that hfm thing!
