mamas,

i'm feeling super :...I thought I had a plugged duct and worked on it massaging it, applying heat, etc. all day. It seemed like it was getting better but just as we were putting DS down to sleep I started feeling sick. Flu-like symptoms. I know that this is probably mastitis because my breast is really very sore, red and hot.

i just don't know what to do. I don't like taking anti-biotics and I know this can clear up without them....but everythign I'm reading says to go and get antibiotics right away. Also, the average Emergency wait at our hospital is over 6 hours (there's 30,000 people without a family doctor in my city of 70,000 so very few doctors servicing lots and lots of people)...I can't leave my DS here sleeping because he'll want to nurse sometime in the next 6 hours! and if I wake him up to go up there he's just going to cry and scream the whole time - we know from experience.

i feel really very lost. I don't have many mama friends I can call and my mom is not very helpful we with these things...

if i'm suppose to do hot compresses and massage every two, how do I keep doing these things when I'm suppose to be sleeping? not to mention doing them during the day with a very active 6 m/o DS who does not like to sit quietly at all.

any advice mamas? :

You sound miserable.

Here is the usual advice for clearing mastitis if caught early: Take the baby and go to bed. Nurse nurse nurse as much as you can. Stay hydrated. Some women take something for the fever and pain (ibuprofen or tylenol). Nurse lots. Stay in bed. I have heard on these discussion boards that some women take vitamin C and garlic as well.

Can your mom come by and help? (That is, help you to stay in bed?)

The worry about mastitis is that if it continues the body 'walls off' the infection and an abcess can occur, which is nasty and needs draining, sometimes surgically.

If you need antibiotics, (if you can't clear it quickly by resting and nursing) can you call your family doctor, midwife or OB? That way you could avoid the emergency dept.

I hope you feel better soon!
