I am on my third day of having mastitis. I started taking antibiotics last night. My fever is now gone but my right breast is still red and sore. How long until my breast is healed? How do I know if I have an abscess?

Hi, there.

So sorry you're having to battle mastitis! It's very tough! It sounds like you had a fever that continued after 24 hours... antibiotics is the usual protocol for mastitis with a fever that lasts over this time. As long as your fever doesn't continue, it may take a couple of days to feel better.

Continue to use wet & dry wam compresses... if you can lay down on a heating pad, this works great. Nurse, massage, nurse, massage on the affected side. Don't forget about the other breast, though. Pump if you need to... just get everything working again.

Drink plenty of fluids and rest, too!

take care!

After my mastitis last year, it took several days for the soreness to go away. I think the breast tissue, on the inside (near the infection) was compressed and actually bruised--that's what it felt like, and I think that's why it took so long for that soreness to go away--that was days after the fever/aches etc were gone. If the fever/chills/aches are going away, then the infection is retreating, but I think the soreness can remain for a while after that. Sorry. I'd consider something like ibuprofen.

Thanks for your replies. I think the soreness is somewhat less today. I is so nice to be getting back normal.
