I had mastitis a little over a month ago. Now I think I have it again-- red/lumpy/achy/swollen side of the breast. This time I also have intense nipple pain in that breast, though, which I didn't have last time. When he latches it feels like something with teeth is gnawing through my nipple. After half a minute I have tears in my eyes, very painful. I am having trouble standing it for more than a few minutes at a time, but I know that if I don't keep nursing on that side the mastitis will only get worse.

Is there anything I can do?

Did some looking online and saw a picture of a "milk blister" and that's what is on my nipple. Guess it was caused by the plugged duct? Trying moist heat...

ooooh, those are so painful! Did you see this kellymom page? I had to get more aggressive with mine and take a sterile needle to it.

Thanks... hopefully I won't have to do the needle, it seems to be better today. It finally "popped" yesterday after about 2-3 nursing sessions where I put a hot compress on right before nursing. It immediately felt sooo much better. And now that it doesn't have the white-clog thing, the redness and swelling in my boob have gotten dramatically better, so maybe it was just a plugged duct behind the milk blister, not full-on mastitis this time. Whew!
