Maybe a reason for the rash

I haven't been able to figure out my dd's rash until I thought of something yesterday. She usually wears a sposie at night because she wets so much and wakes up with the nicest looking tushie. But then during the day, it doesn't matter cloth or sposie, her bottom starts getting little red looking pin prick marks right in her wetting zone. Well, she is a very touchy baby still and spends a lot of time during the day in her swing (I know...but nothing else works). So I was thinking that she is sitting on her bottom then and that could be causing the rash. What do you think? Is that possible? What should I do to help this?

Now if I could just get the tip of ds's penis to stop turning red in fleece (his whole bottom turns red without it).

Definately sounds like heat rash to me. try letting her go without a cover. You may need to change her more often, but maybe cutting out the wateproof layer will allow more airflow. Have you tried wearing her in a sling? That way she's not on plastic.

No advice about the fleece thing

i'd though maybe heat rash as well. i let her go without a cover once but it didn't seem to help. she's a heavy wetter so coverless can be risky.

i've thought about trying a sling but she is almost 3 months and i'm not sure if she'll take to it. she doesn't really like to be held in that position in my arms. she mostly likes to be upright and facing outwards. *sigh*

i've been thinking about some all hemp diapers or something for both of them. maybe some fleece covers or something since ds doesn't like to wear anything wool.
Re the sling - even if your dd doesn't like the cradle position there are MANY others that you can do in a sling. I have an unpadding sling (like a maya) that my mom made me - we got the pattern for free off www.mayawrap.com and the rings from sling rings (link on the maya sight). fabric was $7 at walmart, and it was very easy to do.

I also have a Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch that Rocks! I wanted something for the fall/winter. the sling was great in the heat, but fleece rocks. www.kangarookorner.com. a bit pricey, but they resell great, and there is a yahoo group, babywearingswap, that can help in finding used ones.

Positions - in both my 4 mo old loves tummy to tummy and kangaroo. we do cradle when she is overtired and NEEDS a nap but won't nap in her crib or we aren't at home.

I know tons of mommies on the Myria board that use pouches with their kids and they love them for naps. HTH.
On the sling front, there are a lot more positions for the baby than the cradle hold. It sounds like your baby would love the forward facing position, mine did!

On the diaper rash front, do you use fleece liners for your daughter? Do they make it better or worse? And, if you don't want to have her coverless, have you tried wool covers during the daytime? The knit soaker type seem to breathe almost as well as coverless for us.

Good luck!

Ack! Your son is supporting my mystery hypothesis about my son's poor penis. It's looked awful lately and I honestly have been wondering if it's because we've now got 5 fleece lined fitteds circulating in our stash.

I've already told DH to lay off them for awhile and are going to avoid them and see if all returns to normal in Ian's nether regions but ack! I hope both your sweeties feel better soon.

(P.S. I've got to second the Maya pattern and Walmart fabric. Ian's sling cost me all of about $10, including rings, thread, and fabric. We didn't start using it 'til 8 months, long after he'd outgrown his swing --very big boy-- which is where he spent any time he couldn't be on my lap. If only I'd known what a life saver it would become earlier!)

Laura,

I'd heard mention a while ago about somebody else's son getting a ouchy penis in fleece as well. My idea is that it is nearly impossible to get all detergent out of fleece and if the tip is pushed against it while peeing, it's gonna cause a reaction. It gets so bad looking sometimes....poor boy.

I'll look into making my own sling. I've been wanting to try one but just can't bring myself to spend $40 on something I don't know will work. She doesn't like being carried in a snugli type thing either. I've tried looking for used but I'm short and small-boned so you don't tend to see too many used size small slings around.

Thanks again.
