Hello May mamas!

I think this might have already been a thread somewhere but DH and I were talking about music during labor last night.
So far the best I can come up with for me personally is stuff that I have always found soothing and put me in a good place. I am also looking for recommendations though because I don't have much so far...
Also if someone could point me to the original thread that would be nice!

My list thus far.
American Beauty by Grateful Dead
A mix of Bob Marley's more mellow stuff
A mix of Taj Mahal's (sp?) more mellow stuff
A mix of some Beatles acoustic stuff, very mellow
-sensing a theme of mellow here?
ok my brain just died and this is the most I could come up with before lunch here...I need more.... Music is my friend and has always calmed me down and I am looking to have as many options in regard to selection as possible during my labor, even if I don't use any of them!

Oh, wow, I like your selections so far.

That's what I'm going to be going for, really chill, relaxing, soothing. I'm a big Keller Williams fan (yay Virginia...) and I've already thought about playing some Keller during labor.

But gah, I haven't put together playlists or anything. Is it just me, or is time starting to go WAYYY too fast? I'm so not ready for any of this!

ETA: And yeah, if you haven't heard Keller (he's not really "big-time" popular)... check him out... from your selections, you may dig him http://www.archive.org/browse.php?co...ams&field=year totally legal and Keller-approved downloading of live recordings, if you want to sample...

Haha, thats what I was thinking last night. "ok this is seriously coming up too quickly!"

I love Keller too and have seen him several times in the past few years! I hadn't thought of him but he would be nice! I also am more than familiar with archive as that is where I have downloaded more than half of my collection from!

I am also thinking maybe a little AOD because I love the piano and maybe even Allman Brothers. Sweet Melissa is one of my favorite songs...I can just picture the nurses now rolling their eyes at this "hippie" playing all these bands in the room

Hehehe, hopefully the nurses have had some little hippie times themselves.

I agree with the Enya type stuff. I know it works great for some people, but it annoys when I hear it now. I don't think it would do so well with me in labor. Not to knock those who enjoy it though!

I love Led Zeppelin but was thinking maybe a little raucous for my labor...Maybe some acoustic stuff of theirs? Rhetorical question really

Hahahaha, well, if the hippie stuff doesn't freak out the nurses, rocking out to Zeppelin will DEFINITELY do the job. I'd say go for it. It may motivate you to have productive pushes or something...

come to think of it whenever I was driving on a road trip my myself, I would pop in this 3 disc concert of theirs that I have and would start to drive a little fast and then faster. Getting really into the music....It might actually be helpful for pushing, gets me really pumped up...Never thought of it that way before, ahhh to scare the poor nurses, a little mean yes but funny too!

Now I'm thinking I may put in some Zeppelin-type music.

I may just go for a mix of different styles, because I don't know if I'll want "soothing" when it gets down to it. I may want something a little more bouncy and happy, or something a little faster and more motivating.

Hmmmm....

DH suggested we bring our entire collection of cds, 4 large cases completely full in case I wasn't sure...

Can you imagine your DH or DP flipping through cd cases while you are in labor, "how about this one? or this one? this one? this one?..."

I think I would launch something hard at him...Better to have a small selection I am thinking maybe 10 or so!

Kelly1101, I don't know how familiar or into the Dead you are but if you are looking for something that isn't grating to your ears but still fast and upbeat I can suggest a world of dead songs you can download on Archive or even entire shows you can download. If you like to dance and move, which I do and am thinking maybe would be nice during labor, GD has such wonderful stuff. Anything for any emotion really!
PM if you want!

Hehe, I'm already there-- my mom was toting us around to Dead shows since I was about five or six years old. And she's going to be there in a doula capacity, so if she's handling the music, I know there will be plenty of Live Dead going on...

ahh my poor mom thinks DH and I are some kind of aliens. Loves us anyway though!

LO is going to be born dangerously close to Vibes which we were married at and go to every year. I am still having a hard time breaking DH's heart and telling him I just don't want to go and leave LO with my mom for 4 days! She'll only be around 7 weeks or so! I also don't really think bringing her is an option although they have family camping etc...another conversation for another day (sigh)

You think??? I mean we both desperately want to go. Its our yearly get away and while I know there are lots of babies I have received many conflicting comments on it. For a while I was swinging toward going with the baby then just not going without. It sucks because this is the greatest lineup they've had in years...Crosby Stills and Nash are closing the festival for crying out loud!

I'm not doing any festivals this summer, but Keller is coming to Richmond, outdoor show, May 9...

I'm thinking that if I haven't had the baby yet, I'll just chill in the back of the lawn where it's not so crowded and noisy.... and if I have had the baby... we'll just chill in the back of the lawn where it's not so crowded and noisy....

thats what I was thinking, chill in the back of the lawn in a chair with baby in my lap while DH dances around me! He would happily go without DD but I would only be happy with her there and he isn't comfortable with her being around all the tweakers...Understandable although we'd be in family camping. We were just talking on the phone and both agreed we aren't going to go

There are a couple of Dark Star shows about 20 minutes from us though so we will just drop DD off with Grandma and Grandpa for a few hours and go to those this summer...It makes me sad though. I wish DD's due date was just a month or so in either direction!

You ladies are a bad influence on me. I was thinking I wouldn't be able to take my annual trip home this year because of an infant. The last week of July we go to Canada. Now I'm thinking I want to go!

I love all the music you guys have mentioned, have you ever heard Saul Williams? something energizing from when you're tired from spinning around in your crunchy little earth child skirts (yeah, I've been to those bonfires too
) Saul is a freakin genius.

Jamie T

I have some nerdcore on my MP3 player too, and some SOAD when I feel angry.

I miss the skirts, I tried on a couple of mine yesterday and they weren't quite fitting...Only the ones with the big elastic bands were doing it! I don't know what Im going to do when it starts getting warmer soon. I haven't worn shorts in years!

I will definitely check out Saul Williams, never heard of him. I am always in the market for some new tunes though!

Ahh thought of another one I will bring

Farmhouse by Phish...So good to wake up to!

I started a thread like this a while ago but I ended up deleting it because of no responses.

Anyway, early this week i went through my cd collection and made a mix on iTunes that I plan on putting on my iPod. Its just anything that gives me chills or an emotional response. Very ecclectic mix. Nothing hippie though. I feel outnumbered here!
I like indie rock mostly.

There were a couple of albums that I couldn't pick from so I just plan on playing the whole thing. One of them is 311 and the other is Radiohead.

And I've been picking out some select Sigur Ros songs to download on iTunes. They are super relaxing and hypnotic, if I decide that my regular music isn't cutting it.
