Hey ladies... I just blogged about a picture someone sent me in an email... I did some research on it, and the results are in my post. Let me know what you think. I love getting comments on my blog.

Ewwwwwwwwwww. That's a sick advert for all the reasons you said. It'd b a beautiful pic if it were a breast instead of a bun :

OMG my 3 year old totally thought it was a baby nursing. She did wonder what the sesame seeds were. Ugh.

Children can definitely see that the emperor has no clothes... That's what I love about them!

I just glanced at the rest of the blog, but it was a picture of a baby nursing and they just removed the breast and added that crappy bun, right? It sure looks like a baby actually nursing!

Oh yeah, and at first glance, I thought "wow, that mama must have some type of skin problem".

See, for a person who is used to seeing a baby breastfeeding and knows what that looks like, it's immediately apparent that that's what it is.

... But unfortunately : most people have no idea what a breastfeeding baby looks like, so they see the image and think, "Oh how cute! The baby likes McDonald's!" ...And the thinking stops there. That was the whole purpose of making the ad that way, which is why I find it so offensive.

Does anyone know the bfing rates for Austria, where the ad runs? How is NIP viewed there? Is bfing a mainstream thing? I think those questions matter, since on the blog is this:

Or is it because if the image weren’t Photoshopped, if the image were left alone and you could see that the child isn’t suckling on a sesame seed bun but on its mother’s own naked breast, that that image would be the one causing controversy?

Is that the usual case in Austria? I know it is here in the US.

Beautiful baby of course. I'm pretty amazed that a mama would allow the image to be used like that.... :

These are important questions, and here's what I've been able to find for Austria. It can't really be compared to the United States statistics available because the sample size for the U.S. is tiny in comparison (1/10th the sample size for Austria). It's really hard to say what the attitude toward breastfeeding in public is in Austria unless you're there.

Anyone here from Austria?

But, completely apart from that, let's assume the image of a breast wouldn't be offensive in Austria. I still think the ad is reprehensible because any children or adults driving past a billboard like that would likely think, "Oh how cute; McDonald's for the baby." And even in places where NIP is seen commonly, it's not like people stare at nursing moms' breasts to see the intimate moments like the one clearly pictured in the ad, so there would still be a lot of people, even in Austria, that wouldn't know that that's what the picture was originally. A lot of people might assume that a baby was suckling a hamburger bun, and that this image is totally acceptable. (Which might make some kids ask their parents, "If the baby in the ad can have McDonald's, why can't I? I'm much older. If it doesn't hurt the baby, it won't hurt me.")

I'm guessing you set her straight... But unfortunately, many more people have seen the ad and NOT been set straight, which is the main reason why I blogged about it. I hope that anyone looking for it or encountering it will read what it really is and not be swayed by the adorable baby who seems to be "lovin' it."

That ignorance that your friend had, because she'd never been up-close-and-personal with breastfeeding, is what the advertisers were counting on, that there would be enough people completely ignorant of breastfeeding that it wouldn't matter that some of us knew what they had done, because the majority of people would see it and think it's an unaltered picture.

It's just utterly ....UGH.

My first thought was someone was doing a parody of the Baby Talk cover from last year. Dang... This is sad.

Oh yes, of course I set her straight. The sad thing is that I don't have any children yet and she has 2. :
