This topic realllllly bugs me! If it were a complex drug with multiple side effects promoted by big pharma it would have gone through years ago. Maybe MJ just needs more lobbyists. I think it is cruel to deny someone in intense pain a method of relieving that pain with minimal side effects. Allowing people to use MJ for medical purposes is so far from legalizing the drug for over the counter use that it is ridiculous. What is their hangup???

Their hangup is that they can't make money off of it. It's too easy to grow pot, so the gov't and pharma companies won't profit.
Medical marijuana is especially problematic, since it undermines the gov't's assertion that marijuana is DANGEROUS. How dangerous can it be if people use it to get better?

Because Big Pharma doesn't WANT it legal. It was either the makers of Tylenol or aspirin that lobbied to make it illegal in the first place.

There is a man with cancer who is in our county jail right now..he fled to Canada but they got him and he has to serve 180 days....I will be at the next protest.

As a Christian, I believe that God gave us natural medicines and if they are used as a medicine why should that be a problem?(BTW,Dh and I are probably the only people at church who think this!) I would think that other painkillers ect that people get addicted to all the time are much worse. Also, I know a lot of alcoholics.
I also read that part of it becoming illegal was racist because it was thought that it was a drug for "Mexcians" and they were "dirty"

I'm hoping this case gets through- if only because it's so limited. Maybe the country's not yet ready to sell marijuana like tobacco (which is what I'd like to see happen) but this case is specific enough that maybe nobody can logically argue against it.
This is the most annoying thing ever. Why why why. It makes no sense. At all. I can't believe big pharma can do that. And if it's just big pharma why do all the talking heads on the cable networks and many of their guests constantly talk about how bad it is and how important it is to keep MJ illegal? They can't all be paid off by the big pharma companies. There has to be a secondary reason, why does so much of the public support keeping it illegal? I don't get it at all.

This article is a year old but interesting none the less:

Quote:
Drug companies and their officials contributed at least $17 million to federal candidates in last year's elections, including nearly $1 million to President Bush and more than $500,000 to his opponent, John Kerry. At least 18 members of Congress received more than $100,000 apiece. http://www.usatoday.com/money/indust...by-cover_x.htm
Have you noticed the surge in spending on ads for prescription drugs in the past 5 years? It's nauseating.

As for public support on keeping it illegal...well, the people are misinfomed. I believe big pharma may have a hand in that too.

There's lots of money to be made on MJ.....just think. Monsanto could make a GM version of it and then patent the seed so that people could never grow their own. Then big pharma could get a license to propagate it and sell it as a mood regulator...

I guess I'd better not give them any ideas. They already have their fingers in enough pies.

I think it's ridiculous that tobacco and liquor are legal, but possession of pot can make you ineligible to get financial aid, and send you to prison longer than RAPING or KILLING someone.

I grew up around 2 alcoholics (grandparents) and I would much rather they have smoked a little pot than drink as much as they did.
