You know, I wouldn't even go there. Dishes are not so expensive that you need to use synthetics. Ceramic, glass, wood, whatever, but not melamine.
It's the stuff that contaminated the pet food from China earlier this year, causing the recall and killing some pets. I wouldn't want to worry about it leaching everytime I used it. Just my two cents.

The only way we use synthetic dishes around here is in my DDs play kitchen.

we have quite a few melamine as well as plastic dish sets & i keep them around. i use ceramic when the kids eat hot meals but i feel comfortable putting a sandwhich or fruit or a snack on them. (and who am i kidding....i've put hot things on them, too, but i try not to).
