So I have this really weird memory from childhood, and it just seems so implausible -- maybe it was a dream, I really don't know anymore. What do you think -- could this really have happened?

I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and I lost my blue-and-white striped sweater at recess. I always walked home with my BFF, and on the way home we encountered a 40ish man stooping over something on the sidewalk. As we passed him, we saw that it was a cat with its belly slit open. He was pulling something out of the cat's abdominal cavity, and it turned out to be a blood-soaked blue-and-white striped sweater. He held it out towards me and said, "Is this yours?" in a really creepy way, like he knew it was mine. My friend and I were too scared to do anything but keep walking quickly away. I don't remember talking about it with her at all though, or anything about what happened after that. So maybe it was a dream. I completely thought it was real until I remembered it again recently and saw it with an adult perspective.

Do you have any "memories" like that, where you're not entirely sure they really happened?

I also vote for dream. You didn't relate strong feelings attached to this, you tell the story in a very matter-of-fact way. Sometimes people repress memories of traumatic events and it ends up surfacing later, but this doesn't sound that way. Your reason why you don't believe it is real is that it is "weird" and "just seems so implausible", not that it has haunted and burdened you.

Not to mention the likelihood of someone dismembering a cat on a public path in broad daylight within walking distance of an elementary school that is letting out... I hope it isn't true!

And.....cue nightmares about blue and white striped sweaters. Wow. That sounds like something straight out of a horror movie. A really, really good horror movie.

I'd say you probably dreamed it. But props to you for your brilliant imagination. I've had this happen pretty frequently lately. I chalk it up to the 4 month old interrupting my sleep at night, thus blurring lines between reality and fiction. I've had many of moments where I have to stop and think really hard about whether something actually happened or not. I even asked DP the other day if so-and-so actually said such-and-such or if I had dreamed it.....lol. But mine have all been very casual, every day events, making it that much harder to distinguish.

When I was four or five, I woke up in the night hearing my cat meowing and meowing. I yelled to my parents but they didn't answer. I got out of bed and crawled out to the living room so I didn't trip over anything in the dark. My cat was in a window meowing. I picked her up and carried her back to bed with me. She was purring and all snuggly and we fell asleep together. In the morning she was gone. I asked my mom, "Didn't you hear kitty meowing last night?" My mom kind of freaked out and said she hadn't. I told her what happend last night, and she kind of freaked, but I don't remember what she said. Later as an adult I realized that cat had been put to sleep the day before and my parent's didn't tell me.

Dream or reality??? I don't know. It's one of my most vivid memories. I remember the cat's fur and what she smelled like, the texture of the carpet as I crawled down the hallway.

You lost your sweater, AND you saw someone trying to rescue an unborn striped kitten from a mother cat that had been hit by a car?

This one seems real to me too, but not creepy. I believe spirits can appear to us sometimes through dreams. It's really sweet that the cat was able to return to say goodbye. :)

Yeah, it is sweet. I just am one of those people that get creeped out and scared very easily by the supernatural and such. That's what I meant by creepy.
