Hi. My husband and I are getting to the stage where we are about to TTC. We are begining our search for anything and everything prenatal, pregnancy, birth etc. I am especially looking for a birth center in Memphis or surrounding areas. I have found a few midwives for at home births but I didn't know if perhaps anyone out there knew of any. My cousin suggested I try here to find help in my area.

I responded in your intro thread too - there are no birth centers in the Memphis area. I think there is one in Nashville, but I'm not sure. I know there are some in E. Tn - but that's a lonnnnnggggg drive unless you can move there at the end of your pregnancy.

Welcome, again!

Hey! I'm new to the area, too, and considering TTC again this fall. Other than homebirth, this seems to be the black hole of natural birth. There are no birth centers in the immediate area, although The Farm is about 2.5 hours from here.

I've talked to Andrea and Amy. They both seem super nice, and I'd really like a homebirth. The hospitals here are not very unmedicated-birth friendly. Baptist East actually makes you sign something that says you won't take independent childbirth classes, won't have a doula, and won't impose your opinions or beliefs on your doctor. I have a friend who is going there until they move this summer. Thank goodness she's not having baby there.

We moved from Jacksonville, FL where we took Bradley classes b/4 our daughter's birth last fall. The instructor put me in contact with a friend of hers here who's really knowledgeable about birth options in the area. I can look up the names of the OBs she knows are supportive if you'd like.

Good for you for planning ahead. Just message me if you'd like those #s.

Say huh? You sign a paper saying you wont impose your beliefs on a doctor?
: That is the craziest thing I've ever seen.

WHAT? Geez, I knew it was bad when I read one of the local practices had a form stating that they did not support and would not work with patients who wanted to try the Bradley method in particular, but I had no idea the hospitals were like that! Good thing DH already agreed to home birth for the next one we're hoping for!

It's the same group. They malign the Bradley Method as setting you up for "unrealistic expectations." Look up MOGA's new patient forms online. I couldn't find the imposing beliefs part, but a good friend swore she saw it in the new patient stuff in their office. She also said they are very, very against having a doula present at the birth. What a mess. I absolutely hate that so many people don't think to question those policies, or even notice them.

If anybody is interested, please check out our Yahoo group, Natural_Birth_Memphis. We are trying to get a book club or birth flim night together for sometime soon. Would love for you ladies to join.

Hi Kate, good to see you here! We spoke on the phone. I'm a doula in Memphis, mom to three kids adopted from India. Recall me?

Could you get your friend to share that info with us in a more concise way, like what exactly does it say, word for word if possible.

Wow! I thought Memphis was bad and now that I am looking for birthing centers and saw your thread I KNOW IT IS BAD!! I am from Florida also and we did the bradley method classes in Ft Lauderdale. I had my 2nd in Austin. I looked into birthing centers there and there was a great one but my insurance didn't cover it. Now that we are here I am planning another pregnancy but probably won't have insurance. Since I had both of my kids naturally and with no complications I wanted to try a water birth this time. I guess I will have to try it at home even though the thought of that makes me nervous. I saw only 2 midwives around here. I'd love the name of those OB's if you still have them. Thanks!

Hey Amelia,

Of course I remember you! Hope you are doing well.

Actually, I can do better than that. When #2 is on the way, we are planning to make an appointment with them just to see what the real deal is. I will be glad to share verbatim once I have a copy of the documents. Just waiting until the time is right!

My family practice doc knows we are planning to use a midwife, but she put in a referral for them anyway. Hm, think she has reservations about homebirth? That practice will just make us even more sure that home is the best place to give birth.
