My first ever MDC post - yay!

I would like to make our home greener and was so excited to see the Method home products at Target. Their products are supposed to be non-toxic, naturally derived, not tested on animals. However when I read the ingredients of the cleaner I bought, it lists pretty vague stuff like naturally derived surfactant, degreaser, fragrance. Does anyone know if these products are legitimately non-toxic? I know sometimes labels can be deceiving.

Thanks!

Mary

From what I have found, Method is not all that natural. I am very skeptical when the ingredient list is vague. Stick with Seventh Generation, BioKleen, Simple Green, or some of the homemade products like baking soda, vinegar, etc. You will be much better off and you will know what ingredients you are using.

Method is how I started my trek to natural home care, so it's probably a good thing its out there. I have tried pretty much all of it, but found the more I learned, the less green they seemed. And I love how much better homemade stuff works. Also after I started using homemade cleaners, Method was just a little too harsh, smell wise. But it cleans pretty good, I still use their wood polish, and at the time I LOVED their cucumber scented stuff, also the mint scented window wash.
I just noticed their candles, but haven't tried them, they smell great in the store and soy is a great way to go, as far as "green" goes

Adding: I do believe they are non-toxic

Welcome to MDC.

Your next step might be to start using white vinegar, yup, the plain white distilled vinegar you can buy for cheap in any grocery store. Here are some links with info:

Uh-oh, you got me on a link tangent, I don't know where to stop.

Some people love Mrs Meyers products.

Dr. Bronner's soaps can be used to clean almost anything and they smell scrumptious and go far (can be diluted or just squirted into a bucket of water and they still smell strongly and deliciously).

I find it's so much cheaper to use natural healthy cleaning products. Some people swear by giving their 2, 3 and 4 year old little squirt bottles with half water-half vinegar and a cloth to help clean the house. And we no longer have those strong unhealthy horrible chemical smell destroying the air in our home.

Another hint is that if you would like another smell to linger, besides vinegar, you can add 4 or 5 drops of an essential oil (peppermint, lavender, lemon, orange, etc.) and once the vinegar smell dissipates, you should be able to smell just the essential oil for a while. Mmmmm....

I have been using Method for awhile now and I am really ready to try something else. I use their laundry soap, hand soap and dish soap. I don't think that the dishwasher detergent is that great at all! Dishes are usually still dirty when they come out. I much prefer the Ecover dishwasher tablets. I have one bottle of laundry soap left and then I am going to switch that too. I too started out thinking they were enviro-friendly, but have started questioning that. I use plain vinegar and baking soda to clean almost everything. Also Tea Tree oil is great as a disinfectant (or so I have read).
