I'm trying to make a middle ages type bread bowl. I understand that they weren't actually used in a lot of cases (more often used were ends of bread) but this isn't about being historic, it is because I'm pregnant and craving something I had in elementary school
I tried google but it didn't bring up anything but the historic references. I don't even know how to make basic bread so I need something that says more than "make a loaf of bread and then..." Anyone have a recipe or a link? TIA!

Well for how to shape and bake it, you can use a bowl that is safe for baking (corelle maybe). I have also just made a round loaf and cut out the middle for dipping and put the stew in it.

Now for a recipe....hmmm...I have a great book but it isn't handy. Let me check and get back...

Do you want something historic and if so, england?

I would think that something like that would traditionally be made from a sourdough. So, if you wanted to bake it, perhaps make a loaf of sourdough? If you don't want to go to that length (although it is fun and rewarding), you could perhaps just purchase a round loaf of sourdough from a bakery. The bakery in my local grocery sells a loaf of bread called a sourdough bowl. I buy it for sandwich bread, as that's what we like, but I think you could certainly just cut out the middle and use it as a bread bowl. Also, I think that sandwich shops like Panera Bread sell soup in a bread bowl. Maybe you could look for a round loaf at someplace like that.

Sounds like a yummy craving to indulge!
