My dh and I met with our mw for the first time last night. (thanks for the wise questions). We had a wonderful visit and I felt so comfortable with her, it was wonderful. I had a page long list of questions and she very patiently answered all of them. She gave us a very informative packet of info in case we run into some cynics of hb (although I've been terribly lucky with everyone I've told being fairly supportive). It's illegal in Indiana for her to do a hb so she is really sticking herself on the line, but it willing to put her head on the block for me. For instance, if I have to transfer to the hospital, she will go with me and will be honest and say she's the midwife and we were doing a hb. I just think that's amazingly brave. DH was comfortable with her, too. It was all around a good visit and I look forward to meeting with her in the coming months.

What did your mw do at your first visit?? Was it pleasant?

Wow, she's brave.. can "illegal" hb midwives be charged? I'd be scared, heh. It amazes me how willing some of these midwives are to still do homebirths in states where they're illegal. Aren't they great?
I live in one of those states, too
(Kentucky) I'm really close to the Indiana border. The midwife I'm seeing (not a hb midwife, unfortunuately) is in Indiana, even. What part are you in, if you don't mind me asking?

*edited to remove an irrelevent smiley that wasn't supposed to be there, lol*

I haven't had a prenatal with mine yet, just the consultation. But that went so well that I just can't wait for my first real appointment! Your midwife sounds like a really courageous lady who stands up for what she believes in.

I am glad that you found someone to assist you with your homebirth. I can't believe that it is illegal in so many states to have homebirths
: It just boggles my mind.

Our first mw visit was great too. We heard the heartbeat (I was 11 weeks at the time) and she tried to feel for my uterus to measure but had difficulty doing so.

There were some papers that I had to sign, and she asked some questions about my health, etc. Dh and I had time to ask questions but we didn't have any at that time. I weighed myself and she showed me how to check my urine (with a strip that tests ph, glucose, protein, etc).

She gave me some papers "homework" to fill out and give her at our next appt. She also gave me lab papers to get blood work and urine analysis done.

MW's can be charged, yes. In fact, one was brought to court in Indianapolis last year, I think. I'm also amazed at what these brave mws are willing to do to allow women like us to have choices in birth. If she weren't willing, I would have no choice but to birth in a hospital. ugh!

Just lurking in your DDC, as I am expecting a niece or nephew in February (hooray!), and I wanted to say I'm so glad you are having a great experience with your midwife!
