This is sort of X-posted from my DDC:<br>
My midwife asked me just last week if I would volunteer to be interviewed by a tv crew. For my midwife, I'd do just about anything. And here's the result: my <a href="http://www.wdr.de/mediathek/html/regional/rueckschau/2010/05/05/lokalzeit_koeln.xml?offset=294&autoPlay=true" target="_blank">TV premiere</a>! I'm the silver-haired gal with the horrible accent (it's all in German, of course). Guess that just popped up with my nervousness. My daughter watched with me and asked what they did to my voice! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> And the midwife doing the exam and being interviewed ist my midwife. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/love.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="love"><br><br>
Midwives across Germany protested their situation today. Their liability insurance increases yet again this summer and many midwives are going to throw in the towel. Also many freestanding clinics (? =Geburtshäuser?) will end up closing if the government doesn't take action to rein in the insurance companies. They started a petition today in our Bundestag (=Congress equivalent) and they need 50,000 signatures to force the government to bat an eye and consider their plight. At this very moment, they've rounded up over 15,000 signatures. They have 3 weeks to gather the required 50,000 sigs. To this end they protested and were covered in virtually every TV news program and in many online newspapers.
