Thank you for speaking up Laura. <3 You're right in offering an accurate assesment of AAMI, and I have not seen that recently. Obviously I'm biased, but I believe every school has it's pros and cons, and there is nothing wrong with one school not fitting someone's learning style needs. Keep doing what works for you and helps you learn the best way for you!

I can officially post here as a student!! Woohoo! After passing up the chance to attend IHM, I decided to attend MCU. I'm loving it. I finally feel like after yrs of researching midwifery, I have made the best decision for myself. I got accepted into school on my oldest son's 9th birthday. My journey toward midwifery began with his birth so I feel it only appropriate. I had two my children and wanted to wait until they all were in school. That time came and here I am!

I live in Florida and that brings all kinds of interesting issues when it comes to licensing. With that said, I will be moving out of state when I feel I'm ready to precept. In the meantime, I will be attending skills workshops when and where I can. I will spend time in Utah and the Dominican Republic this year to begin my basic hands-on. I'm currently a birth doula and a volunteer WIC peer counselor. I love what I do and can't wait to see how this journey unfolds.

I have loved reading along with all the updates. Thanks for having me.

Congrat! and Welcome :) I have all of mine in school also and it really is the best for me this way. I could not have done or planned what I have so far with tiny ones. I aplaud anyone who can!

You mentioned going to Utah this year, when will you be there? Maybe we should chat, I leave next week for my first trip and will go again twice more this year. I would love to see the Dominican Republic too, so jealous there for sure!

Hello...Im Kelly Graham. I have been lurking for a long time lol...I am a Midwife Student (BS) at MCU and love it. I live in Florida so since I chose an out of state school I have to do all my clinicals out of state as well. Which is fine because I want to travel and learn from many different cultures. So thats what I am doing:) Hopefully I will stay on and get my Masters. I am going to Abundant Grace of God (Georgia McCad CPM) in Tabuk Phillipines from July to October..I cant wait. I really need to interact and meet with other students :)

Lurking, here! I'm hoping to start my pre-reqs for an accelerated bachelor's in nursing this summer (I already have a bachelor's), and then proceed onto a master's in midwifery! First class is probably going to be statistics....joy. In the meantime, I work at a women's health nonprofit, although not in the medical part, obviously!

Lurking here too, am just beginning this journey. I am due with my second child this Summer (first is 3 years old) and hoping to start prerequisites in the Fall. I know that sounds crazy (it sure does FEEL crazy!) but I feel like maybe taking one night class at a time while the wee one is tiny could be possible, and probably really beneficial to "keeping the dream alive" during those intense infant months. I've been a doula for two years and am feeling "the calling."

My plan/goal is to start an RN program in Fall 2012 and then the next year either work as a nurse in L&D to save up for the next chapter or jump right into a MSN program to get my CNM. Right now I'm thinking about a community college RN program through our local hospital, and Frontier for my MSN. We also live near Yale, which would be "cool," but is also ridiculously expensive and I think I might benefit more from the community-based aspect of Frontier's program, as well as the distance feature because I'm not sure where our family will be living in another couple of years.

Looking forward to watching these boards and learning from those of you who are already immersed in the process. I am really excited to begin this new path...

Hi guys! I'm trying to find a preceptor in my area of Washington state right now so I can join NCM... but otherwise I applied to MCU. NCM really is my first choice though. I have called and emailed every single midwife that does homebirth in the area since my clinicals would require me 10 home births... and that was only yesterday and I've already gotten 2 no's. *sigh* Hopefully someone helps me out soon. I really want to use NCM's program.

Going to keep an eye on this thread!

My sentiments exactly! We live in theSpring/Woodlands area and will be moving to Austin at the beginning of April. My DS is nearly three, that and the thought of adding just one more have kept me form pursuing anything, I took a Doula workshop, but have yet to get certified becuase of the logistics of being on call.

I have looked into at least three different distance learning courses and have decided that I'll just start fresh in Austin. Anyone know of some midwives willing to take on an apprentice in that area?

This is all very encouraging to read. My youngest will start preschool in the fall and I have been thinking for a long time about starting down the path towards CPM. I just can't figure out how I would make this work with 4 kids (9, 7, 5 and almost 3).

I went to the Midwifery Today conference last week in Eugene, Oregon. The day after I returned to NY, my husband suggested that I pursue CPM certification by going to midwifery school! Since he suggested it, I'm going to run with it. I'm seriously considering Elizabeth Davis' school, the National Midwifery Institute.

How exciting for you! It was also my husband who helped me realize that midwifery is my calling. If I had it to do all over again I would have started school earlier rather than later and I would have done school in the first place rather than doing self study. Even though I think I have done fine it has been a ton of work. I am excited for you. Starting as a doula and a CBE made my transition into my apprenticeship so easy.

I'm Amber. I am a birth doula, and student midwife. I'm in SC where - thankfully - CPMs are recognized and the state is generally supportive! I have a 2.5yr old and an 8m old.

I must say that it is so great to have this amazing group of midwives within a keyboard's reach! I am new to the forum, but am quickly realizing that it is just the place I need to plug into.

I am a student midwife in Florida and I have loved every minute! I will be on much to share the experiences. Anyone who wants to become a midwife--DO IT! The universe will make a way.

Our children are 3, 5, 7 and 10. I'm currently practicing as a doula and also working overnights to pay for midwifery school. Making it work isn't always easy, but we do it.

Hey everyone!

I am so excited to share that I am finally pursuing my dream of being a midwife. It's been a long time and I had thought my dream was lost to me. I blogged about it here: http://familiesinablender.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/pursuing-dreams/

I am just starting with AAMI and am happy to find that most of the books are at the library and on Kindle. :) I earned my BA at the Evergreen State College so I work best with self directed study. I also have a Master in Teaching degree. I am a blended family mom with 6 children and one new grandchild. I look forward to getting to know you all!
