Hello!

I recently joined this forum as DH and I are TTC our first baby. I feel blessed to live in the Greater Seattle Area - but I am having a hard time finding midwives that will drive as far South as Renton (or as far North, in the case of some of the Tacoma area midwives).

I've found one midwife who's said she can travel to me - but I've heard you should meet with several to find one you click with.

Has anyone had an experience or heard of any experiences with Charlene Campbell (Wheatley)? Her website is here:

http://birthjoyeducation.com/midwifery-services/

She sounds lovely, I just would like to have a selection. :)

Also, I live about three miles from the midwives at Valley Medical, but I really do want to try for a home birth. I've read a few stories in threads here about Valley Medical, and it seems so-so. I think I'm going to go there for a tour and to meet the midwives just so that I know I did, but I do want a home birth...

Thanks for listening to a newbie ramble on...!!

Hugs and baby dust!

Yes, I saw Exodus Midwifery - but their website is discontinued or canceled or something, so I'm not sure they are still in business? I will call them, though.

I'll check out that other place, too.

Thanks!! :)

I love Charlene. And Ali/Val at PSBC. And Heike there, too!

I will also travel to pretty far if I think I can get there in time, and the woman is willing to travel to me for her prenatal care. That's often the bigger burden - I'm 28 miles from Renton, and it's 15 visits up often, to my 3 visits (home visit prenatally, birth, and post partum visit).

I'm using Jane Drichta (her website is really outdated- she is a midwife now), and I'm in Skyway (West side of Renton.) Not quite as far south as you, but she might travel that far. I interviewed 4 or 5 midwives around Seattle (one even in Lynnwood!), and all said they would travel down to me.

And if you want a homebirth, DON'T go to the midwives at Valley. jmho. :) My first birth was with them, and was medically managed as soon as the midwife walked in the hospital doors (I don't think all the midwives would have handled it that way, but you never know who you'll get on call when you go into labor), and we ended up with a c/s for "failure to progress". Interventions were pushed repeatedly at me, even though there was no medically necessity for them and my birth plan clearly said that I wanted NONE, and I was shown clear displeasure when I refused them.

Oh, thank you for all the replies!! :)

I used to live in Kenmore before we bought our house this last fall. I'd imagined I'd be using PSBC back then, but when we chose a house in Renton I figured I was too far away. I'll add them to my ever growing list (yay!) of midwives to meet!

Thanks, everyone!

Thank you for that! I am glad Valley is so close to me (about a 6 or 7 minute drive) in case something happens, but I do want to avoid being dominated by 'medical procedure'. So thanks for letting me know :)

I have added Jane to my list! :)

I love Suzanne Thomson. She delivered all three of my babies. My second was born at our home in Renton. She used to do prenatals at the PSBC but I think she has a different Eastside location now. She also does prenatals out of her home in Seattle.

Most of the area midwives will travel to Renton. Amanda Feldmann Liddle's office is in Renton but she is retiring in March. Hope you found someone you like!

I didn't use a midwife (instead used family physician Jennifer Spence in hospital who was hands-off and fantastic for a natural birth), but I just wanted to post and say "howdy" since I'm right here in Renton too. A minute away over in the highlands on the next hill over.

Hi, A13xandra!

Thanks for the 'howdy'!

Your baby is gorgeous! Are you a SAHM? I'm currently a housewife and hope to be promoted to SAHM this year.

Anyway - nice to know there's someone close to me from this forum!

@LunaLady - Yeah, I'm a WAHM for the most part, with only a few meetings with clients outside the home that I'm cutting back and bringing baby along! We should get together sometime during the day! I'd love to make a local mom friend, and our kiddos will hopefully be close in age if you are lucky!
