How cool... a thread for me

I'm actually going in for my 2nd surgery, tomorrow. It's very fitting that I wreck Valentine's Day, since my 1st surgery was on my b-day. The 1st surgeon did not take enough tissue around my tumor, so I need to go back in for a re-excision, this is to "clean the margins"....

Mama's..... I'm still nursing strong, thru hell or high water. I'm looking to start chemo about 4 wks from tomorrow's surgery. Noah will be 11 1/2mths at this point. I'd love to push it another two wks, even though I would probably wean him from the breast at 11 1/2mths, but at least I could pump and I would know I made it to his first year. For me this would be such an incredible feat, especially since I first recognized my tumor when he was 8 mths old.

The biggest challenge we faced was having to temporary wean for all my radioactive injection scans. The majority of the medical community were of course ignorant. I had a total of 4 tests. I was told I needed to wean him, altogether 168 hrs. It ended up being only 36hrs.

I couldn't do it without the help of some mama's here who were gracious to look up the radioactive meds in Dr. Hales (Leosmama, was 1 of the awesome mama's). I also was told with my 1st surgery that I would have to wean Noah for 24 hrs after anesthia. I down right questioned the anestiologist on why I needed to wean for 24 hrs. She didn't give me a straight answer, I then asked how different was going under general now, from having a c/s under general, she said no difference. So long story short, I nursed Noah as soon as I got home.

I was getting some grief from family members, on continuing to nurse Noah, but they soon realized I had done a ton of research and they too realized t's not preventing me from treatment right now, so why would I put both of us thru that stress. Believe it or not having breast surgery really didn't dampen our nursing relationship. I did have a lot less milk in the affected breast for the 1st couple of days, but now my breasts are the same size and the healthy breast, doesn't make that much more. It proabably helps that a lot of my nerve endings have been cut . So on a pain factor, it was really just a discomfort.

I am feeling better about weaning him, I've cut him back a lot and actually got my period for the 1st time. I s/w a La Leche leader here and she recommended to schedule his feedings along with my time frame. For instance I have about 4 wks until chemo starts, so this week I nurse him only 4x during the day, with each passing week, I'll take away a feeding. Luckily this boy loves his solids and enjoys some organic formula so I feel okay. My poor sister pumped so much milk for him and he refuses it, I think it's too healthy for him

Mama's thank you so much for the love and support you have no idea how great you make me feel.
