My youngest weaned herself about a year ago when she was 18 months old. I was heartbroken but couldn't force her to keep going. I had been nursing constantly since October 1998 when my older dd was born--she weaned with some encouragement when her sister was about 3 months old. Anyway last night I noticed milk on my left side and today I have what looks like colostrum on both sides. Is this normal? I am not actively TTC and if pg it would be about 3 days pg. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Every now and then I leak a drop or two from each breast (dd has been off of the left breast for almost 2 years, the right for 1 yr). It is oily and cloudy-clear (slightly yellow). I'm sure it's completely normal. It may be the milk ducts completely draining themselves out.....or, hmmm, maybe it is "post-colostrum" to give our children a final boost of immunity. Interesting that you brought this up. Now it has me thinking more about it...

Thanks for letting me know I am not alone. Hearing so many women tell me they couldn't nurse because of supply issues made me wonder what was going on. Of course my first thought was a surprise pg but at this point in my cycle that would be almost impossible.

I saw that you nursed your dd for 7.5 years
I sort of gave my first a push (which I felt terrible about) when she was 4.5 because she seemed to be interfering with the supply I had for her then infant sister--I wasn't getting nearly enough when I was pumping. But I think now two years later she would still nurse if given the chance. Having my second child stop on her own at 18 months was quiet a surprise and in a way heartbreaking because I wasn't ready for her to stop.

My mom is over 50 years old and her youngest is 22. When she was babysitting my ds 3 days a week and he would sleep overnight (in my parents' bed. LOL!) once in a while when he was just weaned (15 mos old) she started leaking sometimes. Have you been around any little ones lately? LOL!

I am totally a believer in the theory that grandmas nursed babies sometimes.

Thank you for your responses. Amoung my friends none of them had heard of this happening--maybe it has something to do with nursing both of my children much longer than any of them did--or it's just the way my body works. Anyway it's good to know I'm not alone.

My late midwife
(who was in her 50s when she died) would still leak every time she heard a baby cry or held a new baby!!!
And her 'baby' was my age! So, even 20-something years after weaning- it IS possible to 'have milk'.
