Milking question :)

523 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  HomeBirthMommy
Okay, so I have these drips of colostrum. Not much unless I squeeze well, but sometimes it will leak a little on my shirt. Not often, though. After baby is born, do I expect more than this immediately? Or will it just be getting drops of colostrum until my milk comes in? Just curious. I guess for some reason I thought colostrum flowed like milk until the milk came in, but maybe that's not true? Or will baby make a letdown of colostrum?

50 questions!

It will probably flow just like that (maybe increasing a bit more) until your milk comes in. For some women, once the milk comes in, it's like someone turned a faucet on!
I'm prepared this time with LOTS of breastpads. For me, the way colostrum flowed and the way breastmilk flowed were not comparable.

ETA: I never got letdowns with just colostrum. The letdowns didn't start until my milk came.

Don't expect more until your milk comes in, but the colostrum does come out more efficiently with baby at the breast. And you're likely to feel let downs before your milk comes in. Colostrum is present in teaspoons, not ounces.
Gotcha, thanks! I kinda like to know what to expect so I don't freak out over nothing. This is good information! I could see if someone wasn't told about this, how they WOULD think that they didn't make enough milk for the baby, specially if their milk took like 7 days to come in or something.

Squeezing your boob will (ime) never produce as much milk or colostrum as a baby will get out of it.

Don't panic! Your babe has only a tiny weeny tummy and will feed little and often to fill it - and at the same time be stimulating your breasts to make milk.

Thanks! That link is very helpful! I think I can squeeze a marble's worth of colostrum out even now, so we will totally be set!

I love having all you ladies to ask questions of! Thanks!

Just a little something that shocked the heck of me when nursing my first-when your milk really comes in, it comes out in many sprays. It's kind of like a shower head. Really freaked me out at first-milk shooting out every which way!
