Hi ladies,

My name is Rachel, I have two beautiful children (Kyrie, who is 5, and Antonio who is nearly 3) and I'm due March 17 with a baby girl! I often come to mothering.com just to browse, but I had forgotten that I had created a username for myself here! If it's all right for me to jump in, I'd love to join this DDC.

I've had a pretty uneventful and good pregnancy so far with the exception of finding a choroid plexus cyst on my 20-week ultrasound. I'm trying to stay positive and know that the outcome is usually good when they are found but it is hard to stay completely worry-free for long!

One of my twins has one, too. Somehow, they could tell that it was disappearing already when they found it. They looked for other markers of trisomy, particularly at the hands. The OB explained that Trisomy 18 (I think, or 13?) babies keep their hands clenched in a fist in a peculiar manner, and if they had pics of the baby with open hands it is almost 100% that the baby is fine, which they did. I've not worried about it at all, I've read so much about these cysts being almost always benign and disappearing without a trace. The OB also mentioned something about them being associated with the development of the cerebro-spinal fluid and some kids' just take longer to disappear, so I think they are pretty common.

Welcome;

I run a small dayhome and one of my parents is also pregnant and she too learned at her 20w u/s that her baby had a cyst (she also had two other markers), they watched her very closely and sent her for weekly u/s and luckily after about a month the cyst had completely disappeared which to my knowledge is very common...

Welcome to the DDC! I am also Rachel and also due March 17, though I am expecting a boy. We also had the choroid cysts at our anatomy scan and after reading about it, I concluded that there was really nothing to worry about at all (unless there was anything else indicating a chromosomal disorder). If your baby was measuring normal size or larger, that alone pretty much rules out Trisomy from what the genetic counselor told me. I hope everything else continues to go smoothly in your pregnancy!

Thanks for the welcoming words and also for chiming in about the cyst. I know that my baby's hands were clenched (or at least one of them) at the beginning of the ultrasound but it had (mostly) opened up later on (her fingers were just curved a little but her palm was mostly open -- I know this because I've reviewed the ultrasound DVD over and over! lol) I also read that it's particularly clenched fists with fingers that are overlapping each other, and I know that my baby wasn't doing that, so that makes me feel better! According to my ultrasound report, they found no other markers so I'm trying to trust that that's the case, but I'll feel better after another ultrasound in a few weeks!

Thanks again for the welcome!

Thanks for chiming in! Another Rachel with the same due date...that's pretty cool. My baby was measuring about 2 days behind so I am thinking that's close enough to being on par! My other daughter always measured a little smaller and I remember having to get a follow-up ultrasound with her to make sure her measurement was okay. She ended up being born 7 lbs 9 oz and then started packing on the weight, spending most of her babyhood in the 95th percentile! So I am thinking that with this baby measuring so close to her due date she's probably just fine! Thanks for hte reassurance.

My three-year-old wasn't too happy to find out we're having another girl either (he's my one boy) but he got over it. ;)

I'm still feeling pretty good -- not looking forward to the aches and pains that are probably just around the corner, though!
