Minneapolis moms help please

We are selling our house in Plymouth and have been looking at homes all over Hennepin County.

We aren't sure of all the *shady* areas and would like to avoid them. Any input?
We know about North Minneapolis.

This isn't meant to be snobby. We just aren't interested in living in a "transitional" neighborhood. I'm concerned for my children's safety and won't live somewhere with regular shootings (even if it *is* very affordable

have you looked at the como neighborhood that borders southeast minneapolis and st. paul?
or the seward neighborhood? not very affordable at all but it seems to be ap/nfl friendly.
how about northeast or colombia heights?
dinkytown/southeast close to the university?
how about south minneapolis in the higher numbers like 30-40th and 5th or so?

good luck.
We have an awesome house for sale in Arden Hills (5 min to 35w)
Safe, dead-end street and on a park.

Your Realtor should be able to give you crime reports for any Minneapolis precinct you are looking in, or you can call the city to request them. 311 is a one-stop number to dial now for city information.
FWIW...

Dear friends of ours who live on the 4000 block of 20th Av. S. in Mpls. just told us that their 86-year-old next door neighbor is selling her house and moving to an apartment. It's a 1920s 2-story house with a big park less than half a block away, and awesome, crunchy next-door neighbors.
Definitely a safe neighborhood, and convenient to the bus lines, lakes, etc.

I can get more info (exact address of the house or whatever) if you like -- feel free to PM me.

I live in Golden Valley!!! Move here its awesome! lol I could use some crunchy neighbors!!!!
Hi Artist Mama,

Can you give me just a little more information?

Such as, what part of the Twin Cities would someone be commuting to/from?

What is the highest price you're willing to pay for a home and what is your sq/ft or bedroom minimum?

Are you wanting new construction/development or an established neighborhood?

Do you want to use a neighborhood school or do you plan to school out of district?

We just did the home search thing but kept to Minneapolis, so I cannot speak to St. Paul (although I have friends there!). We love where we landed but it wouldn't be the right place for everyone. (For example, anyone with a GWB/Cheney affiliation might feel very out of place here...it's practically an artist's colony smack-dab in the middle of Mpls.)

Well we live by Diamond Lake. 58th and 11th. Great neighboorhood, some diversity, good neighborhood schools, lots of kids, walking distance to 3 parks, chiropractor, grocery store, dry cleaners, movie store and local dining. affordable IMO. There is a 3 br/2b fs at the end of our block- ($314 asking)
nak

thank for all the great info!
i need to show this thread to dh.
we sit down with edina realty open in one window and the bus routes in another.

i'll also talk to our realtor when the time comes (waiting on a purchase agreement).

kim- dh commutes to central downtown by bus (so we need to be on/near busline).
most we would pay is 375 for a house and 350 for a condo.
bedrooms- 2 for a condo and 3 for a house.
dh wants new construction. i just want something that doesn't need a bunch of work (btdt).
our kids are young so schools aren't an issue. plus we will homeschool.

i like the idea of sidewalks.
oops baby pooped gg

I live in South Minneapolis, near the east side of lake Harriet. All neighborhoods near the lakes or Minnehaha creek in Minneapolis are nice and very safe. The crime rate in our area is very low. I have never felt the least bit worried about the kids playing outside alone, or riding their bikes to school, walking to friend's houses etc. There are many neighborhoods that have great little buisness districts, with coffee shops, restaurants, library, etc. The Linden Hills buisness district at 43rd and Upton Av. is really nice-- great co-op, toy store, library, and there are lots of parks, on a bus route. Linden Hills is pricey though.

Are there really people who choose to live somewhere with regular shootings?
I just assumed that people lived in places like that because are stuck, have no way out.

Well, right now there is a "revival" happening in North Minneapolis (look just north of 55). A person could buy a brand new and very beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home fully loaded (wood floors, granite countertops) across the street from a park for $288K.

We fell in love with the house and the price but not the neighborhood.
I'm not saying more.

Hey Artist Mama!

I typed up this very long message for you today but the computer ate it.
You don't need to defend your stance on the characteristics of what makes a neighborhood more/less comfortable for you and your family.

Check your PM inbox -- I'm sending you a message.

That's too bad. You must have been so disappointed.

I hope this was not directed at me. I was certainly not saying anyone should be comfortable living where there are shootings ever. I can't even imagine that. I wasn't asking her to defend anything (heck I wouldn't want to live in a "transitional" neighborhood either). Just an actual honest question.

In that price range, you should do fine in a lot of different neighborhoods in the city. By the way, we have a light rail line to and from downtown now. It goes into south Minneapolis down Hiawatha Avenue/Hwy 55.

My bro's first house was in S. Mpls off of Grand Ave. He isn't close to being poor. Anyway they ended up with bullet holes in their car, and sketchy things happening around them. He sold that place and moved to a way-north suburb. So that's good info to know, eh?

OP: where'd you end up moving?
