mirena or paraguard IUD?

Any thoughts? I'm considering the para IUD because it doesn't have hormones, but was wondering what y'alls experiences were. Thanks!

Love the Mirena. Had side effects from hormones from mini-pill, haven't had problems with the mirena.
I also have the Mirena IUD. I got it 6wks PP and haven't had any side effects to speak of. My only problem was that I spotted for 2-3 wks on and off after insertion (was told to expect that) and it was kind of annoying. Now I forget that I have it in. It has not affected my milk supply at all as I continue to be a Jersey cow
. Can't contrast it with the Paraguard, though, as I have no experience with it.

I got the paraguard in December of 2004 and found out I was pregnant in April of 2005. Paraguard was appealing to me because it was hormone free, however, I might have had better success not conceiving with the Mirena.

I spotted for about 3 months, nothing since...no period, either, but I'm also nursing so not sure if it's because of that or the mirena. I've had it for almost 9 months now. The three weeks of minor annoyance was TOTALLY worth it.

love the mirena...no problems so far..i've had it about 8 months
Do you know that the IUD works in most cases by interfering with the implantation of the already-fertilized egg?
I have the Mirena and love it so far. I got it at around 6 wks PP and had light spotting for about a month, then no period till my DD was 13 months (Probably due to me still BF though) The periods I get now are light.

My Dr. said that he won't put the paraguard in his patients anymore because they cause so many problems that he is always having to take them out. My friend has the paraguard and she has horrible periods, to where she has gone to the ER twice because she was losing so much blood.

I have heard that too. I think the Mirena is better about it not working that way because of the progesterone in it. This is what I found-

Q. How does Mirena work?
A. There is no single explanation of how Mirena works.
Mirena may:
Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
Make the lining of your uterus thin
Stop the release of your egg from your ovary, but this is not the way it works in most cases
We do not know which of these actions is most important for preventing pregnancy and most likely all of them work together

How does ParaGard work?

ParaGard works because the copper prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and fertilizing it. It may also prevent the egg from attaching in the uterus. ParaGard does not stop your ovaries from making an egg (ovulating) each month.

I've had two Mirenas and I love them. No side effects other than 6 weeks of spotting after insertion and then periods gradually getting less until now I have almost no bleeding every month.
I had MAJOR problems with the hormones in the pill. The hormones in Mirena are trace amounts and they stay localized to the uterus so they are not in the bloodstream as much.

As to how it works, I agree with what the previous person wrote. The hormones keep the uterine lining thin, making the uterus inhospitable for implantation (I definitely notice this because I never get that bloated, heavy feeling like I used to). That is why the menstrual flow is so light, for most Mirena users. But I think the device itself also makes the environment hostile to sperm in the first place.

I have had the Minera and loved it..I couldn't use the Para bc of the copper content..my body hates copper anything....inside and out (jewlry and such)...My MW's practice (she is with a practice with 4 MW and 4 MD's) won't use the Para anymore bc of bad feedback from patients and the removal rate..

I am using the NuvaRing now bc we wanted to TTC #2 2 years or so (around now....YAY) after dd and didn't want to bother with the IUD..after this next baby (when it should happen) I will go back to the Minera for a bit...

Alot of women I know have used it and have loved it....

I am getting an IUD soon and I am going to get the Mirena, since I have very heavy periods already. If I didn't, I would get the Paraguard since I'm worried about hormones.
I got the Mirena.

I've had horrible experiances with hormone BC. horrible.. including 3 m/c and possibly another m/c that I just always *felt* like I had been pregnant..

anyway. So I was wary of using the Mirena since it has some hormones in it.
But I spoke with aLOT of women who had it, and my dr. said that occasionally he does blood tests in hormone sensitive women who get the Mirena and none of them have shown the extra progesterone.

So I got it 5 weeks after Elosia was boirn and so far I LOVE it.
I don't know it's there, I've had no side effects, and I still don't have my period back. (so the iud didn't bring it back as I had feared).

alot of ladies report shorter lighter periods with the Mirena. but hte Copper T (para guard) is known for giving you a heavier crampier period.

I had Mirena and way more cramping than was normal for me. And it may just be coincidental but after it was taken out it took me foreverrrrrrr to get pregnant again, it was frustrating.
I love the Mirena!! It's the easiest, most effortless BC ever.

Point being....?

Point being that some women would prefer not to have already fertilized eggs, e.g. their children, expelled from the womb. I just think everyone should have the facts before making a decision.
I agree, it's just something people need to be aware of. When I was considering IUD, nobody told me of this. I had to ask if it was a possibility. It made the difference for me. You can make your own decision, but everyone should have all the information.

I see your point and agree that women do need to make informed decisions. I don't consider a fertilized egg to be a child yet, but that's a WHOLE other discussion for a different time and a different place.
We're on the same page, though, that more information is better - whether or not that factors into the decision making on getting an IUD depends on your POV. I respect your position, though.

I had the paraguard, and loved it, but after two years still using it I found out I was pregnant with twins. Not a great success rate, in my opinion!!!

Just thought I'd chime in again on the getting pregnant afterward. I got my first Mirena out in December and was pregnant in February.
(At 39 yeras old, too.) I'm now more than a year into my second Mirena and love it, love it, love it.

On the other issue, fertilized eggs fail to implant naturally all the time, so it's no big deal as far as I'm concerned.
