Monozygotic Twice?

Hello,

Yes. My husband is an identical twin. His mother (my MIL) is an identical twin. His mother is one of 8 girls- the last 4 of which are 2 sets of identical twins. There was also a later set of identical boy twins miscarried. One out of the other set of identicals (my husband's aunt) has identical twins.


Anyone who tells you identicals can't run in families needs to meet mine! (either that, or I've got to start buying lottery tickets!)

When I first had my girls I remember reading about some studies at a college that seemed to indicate that identicals are not as random as we usually think. The theory was that if a certain man with a certain enzyme had intercourse with a certain woman who did not have the substance to counteract the enzyme, the egg would split and mono's would result. Of course, the school had a hard time getting $ to do more research because it's not really considered an important study. That's why I was wondering if anyone knew of a family that had identicals more than once. I only know families with multiple sets of fraternals.

identicals are "supposed" to be random
but they can't explain why they still seem to occur more in some families
i think they just haven't found the mechanism for why it happens

From what I've learned in pre-med (didn't go to med school, changed my mind and went with law- LOL) Anyway, I don't know if new research has come out but when I was in school I had a Biology professor who had idenitcal twins and was saying there is no real medical explaination for identical twins- doesn't necessarily run in families, etc. So, I bet you could- it's kind of a mystery!

I have had 2 fraternal twin pregnancies. My first are boy/girl twins (almost 5 years old!!! ) My last pregnancy was also a twin pregnancy until about 11-15 weeks when we lost the twin. (my son was born healthy at about 10 pounds, however). So, the odds of having 2 twin pregnancies got us! I had them check really early with this pregnancy to see if it was a singleton and was shocked to find out there was only 1 baby!!! But the odds of having twins 3 times was a bit much LOL- I was panicing because we have a minivan and there wouldn't have been enough room for carseats!!!

A woman had Quads in the same hospital as us - two sets of identicals. Two eggs that split.
Only a handful of those in the world

There's a mom in my multiples club that has two sets of twins, less than two years apart. I believe only one set is MZ, but I could be wrong. I also know of a mom in our area that has MZ quads. Not two sets of MZ twins, but MZ QUADS!!! I think there's maybe one or two other set of MZ quads alive in the world right now.

I love my boys, but frankly, it's the aspect of increased likelihood of another twin pregnancy (age, # of pregnancies, and the dumb luck we seem to have) that has pretty much assured of me never getting pregnant again--by my choice. So...man, I can understand the jolt of fear.

The mama I know with two sets of twins (4 under 2!!! Holy sh!t!) is very open with the good and bad of her experience. But having twins and a toddler has so kicked my ass physically, emotionally, and spiritually...I know I am not up to that challenge.

I would have twins again. More twins, same ones, whatever. I love having an excuse for being crazy.
